Vegetarian, vegan and allergies on Ha Long cruises

A Ha Long kitchen will cook vegetarian, vegan, halal and allergy-safe meals if it hears in time. What counts as in time depends on the operator, from six weeks on one fleet to a word on the pick-up bus on another.

halongtrip crew·Updated ·6 min read·Part of What you actually get on board a Ha Long cruise

Yes. A Ha Long cruise can feed a vegetarian, a vegan or a guest with a food allergy, provided the kitchen knows before you board. Between August and October 2026 we read the operator websites behind 89 of the boats we publish and found written statements on special diets for 44. Vegetarian food is named for 34 of them, vegan for 20, gluten-free for 17 and halal for 13.

What separates them is notice. One fleet asks for six weeks; another is happy to be told on the transfer bus. Bai Tho Junks explains why: cruise kitchens prepare ingredients before departure, so your request has to arrive before the shopping does.

Can a Ha Long cruise feed a vegetarian or vegan?

Yes, and Vietnamese cooking helps. Rice, tofu, mushrooms, greens and noodle broths are ordinary parts of the menu. Bai Tho Junks publishes a sample vegetarian menu from Victory Star Cruise with mushroom and vegetable soup, fried tofu, rice vermicelli with aubergine, pumpkin soup and a vegetable curry. Aime’e Cruise says it serves Indian vegetarian menus alongside Vietnamese ones and can turn most dishes vegan by changing the stock, the sauce or the dairy.

Vegan is the harder ask because of fish sauce. Aime’e calls it traditional in Vietnamese cooking and tells vegan guests to say “no fish sauce” in those words. Paloma Cruise adds a warning on its dietary page: some soups served to vegetarians contain no meat yet still carry a trace of animal product from the seasoning. If your rules are strict, list them. Bai Tho Junks names egg, dairy, onion and garlic as the details worth spelling out, and advises asking for confirmation in writing.

What do operators say, boat by boat?

Vegetarian food appears for 34 of the 44 boats; vegan, gluten-free and halal appear for fewer, and only Catherine and Mon Cheri say their halal food is certified. The wording below is paraphrased from each operator’s site.

How much notice do you need?

Give at least a week if you can, and six weeks on the Indochina Sails boats. The operators that set a deadline range widely:

Boat Notice the operator asks for
Indochine, Indochine Grand, Indochine Premium At booking, and no later than six weeks before sailing
Au Co, Bhaya Classic, Bhaya Soul At least one week before departure
Paloma At booking, or one week before departure
Emeraude Classic Seven days before check-in, with other special requirements
Athena Premium, Athena Luxury Three days before departure
Heritage Cruise Binh Chuan As early as possible, ideally three days
Amanda Legend Two days before departure
Larissa 48 hours before departure
Scarlet Pearl One day before departure
Paradise Elegance, Paradise Grand, Paradise Legacy In advance, or on arrival
Dragon’s Pearl, Dragon Legend, Prince, Red Dragon At least four hours before the cruise sets off
Unicharm Tell the crew once you are on the pick-up bus
Cozy Bay Grand At booking, then again with the crew at boarding

Booking through an agent adds a step: the Heritage Cruise Binh Chuan FAQ suggests agent-booked guests tell their agent too, so the diet is covered for the rest of the trip. A guest on Genesis Regal advised in a review that anyone with restrictions should tell the staff when booking.

Can you get halal, Jain or kosher food on board?

Two operators say they hold a halal certificate. Catherine Cruises says Halal Vietnam certified it on 18 February 2025, that its ingredients are halal-sourced right down to cooking oils, condiments and drinks, and that there are prayer spaces on board. A Catherine guest wrote in a review that the food was good if not perfect and that the crew worked hard to meet the halal request. Mon Cheri’s home page describes a halal kitchen holding a certificate from the Halal Vietnam Association, and a Muslim guest on that boat advised in a review to request it in advance.

Several other boats also offer halal food, including Indochine, Capella, Lyra Grandeur, Peony, Starlight, Victorious, Cozy Bay Grand and the three Paradise boats. If certification matters to you, ask the operator to send a copy before you pay.

For Indian vegetarian and Jain diets, Ambassador Cruise, the company behind Ambassador Signature, says an Indian chef on board cooks dedicated Indian menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with special care for vegetarian and Jain preferences. On Ambassador Signature, a guest who mentioned a vegetarian diet ahead of time had a full vegetarian menu cooked just for them. Peony’s operator lists kosher among the diets it serves.

Can a cruise kitchen handle a serious allergy?

It can keep an allergen off your plate, but a trace-free kitchen is harder. The catch, as Cozy Bay Grand spells out, is that one galley cooks shellfish and fish every day for everyone on board, flagged allergy orders get their own pans and stations, and the kitchen is not certified allergen-free. For anyone with a history of anaphylaxis, it advises carrying your own medication and telling the crew yourself when you board. Cozy Bay Grand also says its standard menus, like most on overnight cruises, put shrimp, squid, crab and fish into lunch and dinner.

Notice is no guarantee either. On Ambassador Signature, a guest who listed allergies at booking had to remind the crew twice during meals. A vegan guest on Bhaya Soul gave three months’ notice and still found that dessert was always fruit, happy hour offered peanuts and the food activity on Cat Ba had nothing vegan. Repeat the request at boarding and again at the first meal.

Gluten is easier to manage, Aime’e says, because so much of the menu is rice. It marks gluten on its menus and flags soy sauce, bread, some noodles and battered food as the usual sources. Paloma suggests skipping the breakfast bread for eggs and rice. On Emeraude Classic in 2017, a guest with coeliac disease found the buffet unsafe, so the chef asked what they liked and cooked safe lunches and dinners for them.

What do children and babies eat on board?

Some boats cook a children’s menu on request, and Bhaya and Cozy Bay Grand both expect parents to bring infant formula. Bhaya Cruises offers a kids’ menu and baby food on advance request, and says it does not supply infant formula. Cozy Bay Grand asks parents to bring their own baby food and formula; the kitchen will warm bottles and food. Heritage Cruise Binh Chuan offers children’s meals on request, Paradise Vietnam mentions simpler dishes for young eaters, and the Genesis Regal and Majesty Prime sites list children among the dietary needs their kitchens meet, alongside vegetarians. More in our guide to cruising with children.

Does a special diet cost extra?

Usually not. Cozy Bay Grand makes seafood-allergy substitutions at no extra charge and runs vegetarian, vegan and halal requests through the same process. Bai Tho Junks says that, asked ahead, vegetarian meals can in many cases be covered by the normal meal plan. Bhaya Cruises charges only when you change a diet you have already confirmed at the last minute. Drinks are a different question, covered on our page on what is not included.

How do you make the request?

Put it in writing when you book, in the special-requests box or an email. Name what you avoid: meat, fish, fish sauce, egg, dairy, onion, garlic. For an allergy, say how severe it is. Cozy Bay Grand’s chef plans differently for a guest who gets an upset stomach from shrimp and one who has had anaphylaxis from shellfish, and the operator asks guests not to play it down on the booking form. Ask for a written reply, then mention it again at boarding.

For the standard menu itself, see our guide to food on board.

Common questions

Do Ha Long Bay cruises serve vegetarian food? Yes, on request. Vegetarian food is the diet operators mention most often in what they publish, and Vietnamese cooking has plenty of tofu, mushroom, vegetable and rice dishes to draw on. Tell the operator at booking: Bai Tho Junks, for one, says its kitchens prepare ingredients before the boat leaves.

How far ahead should I mention a food allergy? As early as you can, and a week ahead at minimum on the Bhaya and Paloma boats. Indochina Sails asks for six weeks. Shorter windows exist, from three days on the Athena boats down to four hours on the Indochina Junk fleet and a word on the pick-up bus with Unicharm. Whatever the operator says, repeat the allergy to the crew when you board; Cozy Bay Grand, for one, asks guests with severe allergies to carry their own medication.

Is there a halal-certified cruise on Ha Long Bay? Two operators say so. Catherine Cruises states it holds a Halal Vietnam certificate awarded on 18 February 2025, and Mon Cheri describes a halal kitchen certified by the Halal Vietnam Association. Several other boats, including Indochine, Capella and Starlight, offer halal food. Ask for a copy of the certificate if that matters to you.
