Wooden hull or steel, and what it really tells you

Fifty-seven of the seventy boats we track are steel. Thirteen are wood. Most people never find out which they booked until they are standing on it, and the guides that mention hulls at all treat wood as a romantic downgrade: charming, older, a bit cheaper.

The prices say otherwise. The cheapest boat in our entire set is wooden, at $80 a head. So are the two most expensive, at $510 and $615. No steel boat in our set is advertised above $415.

The median launch year makes wood look like the older format. Split the thirteen boats out and that picture falls apart. Nine of them launched between 2007 and 2018 and sit between $80 and $205. The other four launched in 2026, and two of those are the dearest boats we track.

A third of the wooden fleet is brand new. Nobody is building budget wooden boats any more and nobody has stopped building wooden boats. What is happening is that the format has split in two, with old cheap hulls at one end and new expensive ones at the other, and almost nothing in the middle where most of the steel fleet sits.

So a wooden hull tells you nothing about price, age or standard on its own. You have to look at the individual boat, which is a dull conclusion but a true one.

Wooden boats are smaller, and that is the real difference

The median wooden boat has fourteen cabins. The median steel boat has twenty-four. The largest wooden boat in our set has twenty-one cabins; the largest steel one has fifty-six.

This is the difference that actually reaches you. It is not the material under the waterline, it is that a wooden hull in this bay comes attached to a smaller boat, fewer guests and a shorter list of facilities. Where the wooden boats sail is skewed too. They are 36% of the Bai Tu Long fleet, 26% of Ha Long, and 8% of Lan Ha. If you book Lan Ha you will almost certainly be on steel.

What the reviews say, and why we do not trust them yet

Guests on wooden boats leave better reviews on every measure we track. One and two star ratings run at 2.6% against 5.4% for steel. The crew get mentioned in 90% of reviews against 80%. Complaints about the number of other people run at 2.4% against 6.9%.

We are not going to tell you that wood causes any of that, for two reasons.

The first is sample size. Only five wooden-hulled boats in our set carry collected reviews at all, against forty-four steel ones, and 460 reviews against 6,644. Five boats is a handful of businesses, not a category.

The second is more interesting. Wooden boats are smaller, and small boats already show better numbers in our data regardless of what they are made of. The two variables move together in this fleet, and with seventy boats we cannot separate them. The honest reading is that wooden boats look better because small boats look better, and wood happens to come in small.

The number nobody publishes

Not one operator in our set of seventy publishes when the boat was last refitted. Not one.

For a steel hull that is a gap. For a wooden hull working salt water year-round it is the single most important fact about the vessel, and it is unknown across the entire fleet. A well-maintained wooden boat from 2009 is a better proposition than a neglected one from 2019, and we cannot tell you which of the thirteen is which, because the information does not exist in public.

Launch year is the closest proxy on offer, and it is a poor one. We publish it because it is what exists, not because it answers the question.

The catch

Wood asks more of the operator and gives more back when the operator delivers. Timber moves, needs recaulking, and shows its condition in a way that painted steel hides. That cuts both ways: on a boat that is looked after you can see it, and on one that is not you can see that too.

The trade-offs are practical rather than romantic. Wooden boats in this fleet are small, so the pool, the spa and the second deck bar are mostly not there. They also carry thinner public records, because a fourteen cabin boat generates a fraction of the reviews a forty cabin boat does, which means less to read before you commit.

If you want the look, book the boat rather than the material, and ask when it was last out of the water. It is the one question in this article we cannot answer for you.

Common questions

Is a wooden boat less safe? We have no safety data of any kind and will not guess. Vietnamese overnight boats are licensed and inspected by the authorities regardless of hull material, and inspection records are not public.

Is a wooden boat noisier? Slightly less likely to be mentioned in our reviews, at 1.1% against 2.0% for steel, but both numbers are small and the wooden sample is thin. Engine noise and generator noise depend far more on which cabin you are in than on the hull.

Are the new wooden boats actually wood, or a wooden look? The ones we track are recorded as wooden-hulled by the operator and at least one independent listing. We have not been aboard to check the construction ourselves.

Which should I book? Pick on size, bay and itinerary. If two boats come out level on those and one is wooden, take the wooden one for the look, knowing you are buying appearance rather than a measurable difference.
