Dragon Legend is a 24-cabin steel boat run by Indochina Junk on Bai Tu Long, the bay east of Ha Long proper, which means she does not visit Sung Sot or Titop and does not queue behind the fleet that does. You wait at the company’s lounge at 01 Ha Long Street in Bai Chay, ride an electric cart to Ha Long International Cruise Port, and board at about half past twelve. On the halongbaytours.com listing read on 6 August 2026, a Deluxe cabin for two was $400 for the night, the highest rate that listing published: from $200 per person, two sharing.

The company runs two Dragon Legend boats and two sister brands, Red Dragon and Dragon’s Pearl. Photographs, reviews and itineraries for all of them turn up in the same searches, so check the boat’s name on anything you are shown, and on your confirmation.

Where does Dragon Legend go?

Out to Bai Tu Long over lunch, which is at 13:15. At 14:30 you climb into Thien Canh Son Cave, and at three the kayaks go out among the islets. A Banh Xeo cooking class starts at 17:15, dinner is at seven, and squid fishing follows. The next morning starts with tai chi at six, then a rowing boat takes you round the floating village at Vung Vieng from 07:45. Check-out is at 09:45, brunch is a buffet, and you are back at the port between 11:30 and noon. The operator’s bus stops at Yen Duc village for a water-puppet show and reaches Hanoi between 16:00 and 16:30.

The three-day trip is the reason to look at this boat. You stay on Dragon Legend for all three days, with no change to a day boat. On the first afternoon she goes to Cap La, the old navy anchorage, for two hours of kayaking. Day two takes in Thien Canh Son Cave and Hon Co in the morning, then Cong Dam beach, where lunch is a barbecue on the sand at 12:30, and a cooking demonstration while she sails on to anchor at Cong Do. Vung Vieng is the last morning. If you have not chosen the bay yet, how the three compare comes before comparing boats.

Where do you board, and how do you get there?

At Ha Long International Cruise Port, on the Bai Chay side. Check in at the Indochina Junk lounge at 01 Ha Long Street by 11:30; the cart runs you to the quay between 11:50 and 12:15, and boarding is from 12:30. The operator, halongbaytours.com and besthalongcruises.com all name the same port. Give your driver the lounge address as well as the port name. Which harbour you leave from explains why it matters.

Book with the operator and the shared Indochina Go limousine van from the Old Quarter is in the package, collecting between 08:00 and 08:45. Agencies sell the cruise without it: halongbaytours.com adds $40 an adult for the round trip by van. Our Hanoi to Ha Long guide covers the other options.

What are the cabins like, and what do they cost?

There is one cabin type, the Deluxe, 26.5 m² with a 9 m² bathroom. Two of the 24 connect for families. The operator’s page lists a bathtub, and a guest describes lying in it with a window onto the karsts.

On the halongbaytours.com listing read on 6 August 2026, a Deluxe cabin for two was $400 for one night and $725 for the whole three-day trip. The second night costs $325, about 81% of the first. Across the 66 boats where that listing shows both prices on the same day, the middle ratio is 1.94, so on most boats the second night costs about 94% of the first. Only five boats in that set have a lower ratio.

What is on board?

Four decks, with the sundeck on the top floor. There is a seawater pool and a spa on the top deck with a steam room and sauna. Kayaking is included. The operator puts the crew at 35 for 24 cabins. One guest reports a lift on board, which matters on four decks.

The operator’s package covers meals, tea and coffee at breakfast, a welcome drink, an English-speaking guide, kayaks, tai chi, the cooking class, the rowing boat, entrance fees, the water-puppet show and the van. Drinks and the spa are extra, and cards carry a 4% charge.

Under the operator’s terms, a child under 4 sharing a fully paid cabin is free, one per cabin, and children from 4 to 12 on a separate bed pay 75%. An extra bed costs $120 a child for one night. Life jackets are carried only for children over five, so bring your own for a younger child. The operator does not recommend the trip to guests over 80.

What do guests report?

The reviews we read are few but specific. A guest travelling with a company group in July 2025 writes that the itinerary was changed repeatedly, enough that an older foreign member of their party could not keep up with it. A two-star review is about handling rather than the ship: an unpleasant guide, a pickup that ran late with no message, and a couple split up because they had joined the tour partway through. Ask for dated photographs of the cabin you are being sold, and read how old is your boat for what age means on this coast.

What happens if you cancel, or the weather does?

The Ha Long Bay Management Board decides closures, by 15:00 on the day at the latest. If the cruise is cancelled before you leave Hanoi, the operator refunds in full. Cancelled at the harbour, you pay $15 for lunch and the ride back is free; if day trips are still allowed, the operator offers a Dragon Legend day cruise at $75 a person. Cancelling yourself more than 30 days out costs a $10 fee per booking, then 15% to 14 days, 25% to 7 days, 50% to 48 hours, and the full fare after that. The deposit is 50%. Agencies print their own scales, so read the one on your quote.

Who is Dragon Legend for?

Travellers who want quiet water and a long trip, and who would rather sleep on the same boat for both nights than change boats for the middle day. Families who want the transfer handled and a connecting pair of cabins. She is among the Bai Tu Long boats.

Look elsewhere if you have one night and a picture in your head. Bai Tu Long is not the postcard, and a first-time visitor who came for the classic view will spend the trip wondering where it is. The same goes if you want a newer, larger cabin for $400.

Where these facts come from

The lounge, the times, both programmes, the inclusions, the child, weather and cancellation terms and the crew number come from indochina-junk.com and dragonlegendcruise.com, read on 14 October 2026. The cabin size, decks, hull and pool are from dragonlegendcruise.com, with halongbaytours.com and besthalongcruises.com in agreement. The launch year is the one three booking sites give. Prices and the van fare are from the halongbaytours.com listing read on 6 August 2026; the second-night comparison is from our own probe of that listing. Guest remarks are from Google reviews.

Why people book Dragon Legend

Book it if

  • You want the quiet water. Bai Tu Long carries a fraction of the traffic of Ha Long proper and this boat does not go near the famous caves
  • You want the three-day trip. She stays on the same boat all three days and reaches Cap La, Cong Dam and a beach barbecue at the far end of the bay
  • You want the road from Hanoi in the price; the operator's own packages include a shared limousine van and a water-puppet show at Yen Duc on the way back

Our read

Dragon Legend sells the water and the route. She leaves Ha Long International Cruise Port for Bai Tu Long, with Thien Canh Son Cave and kayaking on day one and Vung Vieng by rowing boat the next morning, and the three-day trip goes on to Cap La and Cong Dam without changing boats. The cabins are 26.5 m² on a 2014 hull. Book three days if you can; her second night costs 81% of the first, against about 94% on most boats.

This is not our score. It is the aggregate across the listings we track, and shows where Dragon Legend Cruise sits against the 108 boats we can score: a median of9.5 on 87 reviews. Scores in this bay cluster near the top (8–9.9), which is why we show you the review count as well.

That number is what we collected and read. The score beside it is the average the listings publish, computed on 160.
