How many days in Ha Long Bay: two or three?

The short answer: two days and one night is enough for most people, and three days is worth booking if the bay is the reason you came to Vietnam. What changes the decision is the price of the extra night, and on the rates we read it is close to the price of the first one.

How much does the second night cost?

About 94% of the first. One listing site prints cabin rates for both trip lengths side by side, and 66 of the boats we publish appear there with both. We read 58 of them on 28 October 2026 and the other eight on 6 August, and matched the same cabin grade in each table, 272 grades in all.

The whole three-day trip comes to a median of 1.94 times the two-day price for the same cabin. Widen it to every listing we read and the count rises to 70 boats with the same median of 1.94, the figure our two-day itinerary page uses. On the cheapest cabin for two, that is a median of $280 more for the longer trip. The narrowest gap belongs to Nostalgia, where three days cost 1.75 times two; the widest to La Casta, at 2.04. Even on Nostalgia the second night still costs about three quarters of the first. Ask for both prices on your own dates before you decide.

How do guests rate each length?

About the same. Among the English reviews we had read by 28 October 2026, 673 mention a two-day trip and 506 a three-day one. On the headline score there is little between them: 80% of the two-day reviews give five stars against 83% of the three-day ones, and about 6% of each give one or two. Where the longer trip goes wrong, it goes wrong on the middle day.

Of the 26 three-day reviews that describe the middle day on a separate day boat, 5 give one or two stars, against about one in sixteen for three-day reviews as a whole. What does the extra day buy?

A shore day. A two-day one-night trip is, in practice, an afternoon and a morning with one night between. On the timetables operators print, boarding is usually about 12:00 and landing about 11:00 the next morning, some 23 hours in all; our guide to boarding and return times lists them boat by boat. You get one sunset and one dinner on the water, and you are heading back to the pier not long after breakfast. On a tight schedule it works.

A three-day two-night trip gives you a full middle day with no packing and no road transfer. That is where the land activities sit. Of the 65 boats whose one-night and two-night itineraries we read, cycling is on the three-day trip only on 25 of the 26 that offer it, and the beach on 29 of 44.

Is a day trip enough?

For Sung Sot, Luon and Ti Top in Ha Long Bay, yes. For a pearl farm, Viet Hai or Vung Vieng, no: none of the shared day boats we list goes there. A day trip from Hanoi runs about thirteen hours door to door, and about seven of those are spent getting there and back: Hera’s day cruise collects from the Old Quarter at 07:00, sails from 11:30 to 17:45 and is back in Hanoi at 20:00, and Cozy Bay’s gives you five and a half hours on the boat between a 07:10 pickup and a 20:30 return. One night costs the same drive and buys about 23 hours on the water.

Every Ha Long day boat on our day-cruise page stops at both Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island; six of the nine also take in the lagoon at Luon Cave. The overnight boats reach those places too: of the 31 Ha Long Bay boats we publish, 28 stop at Sung Sot and 29 at Ti Top. Where they differ is the morning. Fourteen of those 28 go into Sung Sot after breakfast on day two, and on 30 of the 32 boat timetables that give tai chi a time, it starts between 06:00 and 06:45, before any day boat has left the pier.

Some stops a day trip does not reach at all. None of the shared day boats we list goes to a pearl farm, Viet Hai village on Cat Ba or the floating village at Vung Vieng, yet 14 overnight boats in Ha Long Bay list a pearl farm, 32 of the 46 Lan Ha boats stop at Viet Hai and 14 of the 15 Bai Tu Long boats visit Vung Vieng. Squid fishing happens after dinner, starting between 19:00 and 21:30 on 24 of the 26 boat timetables that time it.

The day trip is cheaper. Shared day boats we read on the operators’ own pages charged from $49 to $119 per person (August to October 2026), some with the van included. A night on board ran from $105 to $423 per person, two sharing, with a median of $155, across the 83 of our 92 boats with a one-night rate (read 6 August to 28 October 2026), before any transfer.

Which one suits you?

Choose two days if your calendar is the binding constraint, if this is one stop on a longer Vietnam route, or if a single night on the water is what you came for. It is the honest choice for a short trip.

Choose three days if the point of the trip is the bay itself and the second night at close to full price still feels worth it. Our guide to the caves and islands covers what those extra hours actually reach.

The catch

The catch with the longer trip is that you pay nearly full price for a day that, on some boats, is spent on a smaller day boat. Ask whether day two is on the ship or on a day boat, how long you will be on it, and whether other ships’ guests share it.

The ratios here are the rates one listing publishes, and you may be quoted something else; the gap can also change by season. The review split matches trip length from what guests wrote, so a one-night guest who wishes they had stayed longer can land in the three-day group. It is not enough to feel unhurried, because you board around 12:00 and are back at the pier by about 11:00 the next day.

What does the third day actually add? A full middle day on the water with no road transfer. On some boats it is spent on a smaller day boat, with lunch, kayaking or a village stop, before you return to the ship for the second night. On Lan Ha boats that is usually when the bikes come out, for the ride to Viet Hai on Cat Ba.

Is the second night cheaper than the first? Barely. Across the 66 boats on that listing, the typical saving on the second night was about 6%, and the largest, on Nostalgia, was about a quarter. Even there, the three-day trip cost 1.75 times the two-day price for the same cabin.
