Cat Ba and Ha Long City, around your cruise

Every guide to a Ha Long trip eventually tells you to spend a night in Cat Ba or a night in Ha Long City, and the advice usually treats them as an even choice. In the fleet we track they are not even. Of the seventy boats, forty-two say where they board, and all forty-two board on the Ha Long City side, at Tuan Chau Marina or one of two smaller ports. None of them names a Cat Ba pier. Before you decide which town to sleep in, the boats have decided which town you will be standing in at nine in the morning.

Read the table as two facts. The first is that the named half of the fleet is unanimous: it boards at Ha Long City. This holds even for Lan Ha Bay trips, which travellers often associate with Cat Ba, because the boat still tends to set out from Tuan Chau and sail across to Lan Ha rather than starting on the Cat Ba shore. The town in the brochure photos is not always the town you launch from.

The second fact is the twenty-eight that name nothing, and we treat them honestly below. But for planning the day around your cruise, the signal is clear enough: unless your specific booking says otherwise, your transfer will aim for Ha Long City, and that is where a spare morning or afternoon will most likely land.

What that means for your spare hours

The practical consequence is about time, not scenery. If you arrive the night before, the sensible base is near your harbour, which means Ha Long City for almost every named boat in our set. Trying to stage the night before from Cat Ba, when your boat boards at Tuan Chau, adds a ferry and a drive to the start of a trip that already begins with a long transfer. The geography quietly punishes the mismatch.

Cat Ba earns its own night at the other end, or as a separate leg, if the island itself is what you want, its beaches and the national park. What it does not do, for the fleet we track, is serve as the convenient launch pad the pairing implies. If your plan is simply a comfortable start and finish around the cruise, the harbour has already pointed you at Ha Long City.

The long drive both towns share

Neither town shortens the journey from Hanoi. All three boarding harbours sit around Ha Long City, three to four hours out by road, and Cat Ba is further still once the ferry is counted. This matters more than it should because the transfer is almost never in your fare: just three of 139 listings include the Hanoi transfer in writing. So most travellers are arranging their own car to Ha Long City, and the town you pick to sleep in is a town you will reach after that same long drive, not instead of it. The catch, and what we cannot see

This guide can tell you where the fleet boards. It cannot tell you what to do in either town, because that is not something our data measures, and a list of restaurants and viewpoints is exactly the internet-compiled writing this site tries not to add to. What we hold is the boats, so what we can say with confidence is the boarding pattern, and no more.

The twenty-eight boats that name no harbour are the real limit here. Their boarding point is unknown, we cannot tell you where they start, and some of them may well board at Cat Ba, so the silence does not mean they do not. So read the headline precisely: of the boats that state a harbour, all are on the Ha Long City side, and Cat Ba is absent from the named list rather than absent from the whole market. If a Cat Ba start matters to you, ask the operator directly, because the listing may simply not have said.
