Ha Long Bay in September: the month to move

Across every month we hold, about one review in twenty sits at one or two stars. In September it is closer to one in ten.

That single comparison is the reason this page exists. September is also the thinnest month in our whole set, with 336 reviews against 1,046 in April, and thin volume in a month sitting inside the school holidays is itself a signal.

Those counts use every review we hold with a date. The subject percentages further down come from the 7,104 that carry enough written text to classify, so the two sets of figures rest on different denominators and we have labelled which is which rather than blending them.

The average is the lowest of any month and the bad-review rate is the highest. Those two usually move together, so on their own they would not be worth a page. What makes September different is what people wrote about.

Guests stop writing about the crew

We classified the text of every review by subject. September inverts the pattern that holds in every other month.

Across our whole set the crew are the most discussed thing on a Ha Long boat, in four reviews out of five. September is the only month where that figure drops below three quarters, and it is the month where the cabin climbs highest.

We cannot prove the mechanism and we are not going to dress a guess as a finding. What we can say is that this is the shape you would expect when people spend more of their trip indoors and less of it doing the things a crew leads. A cabin you are pleased with is a cabin you barely mention. A cabin you sat in for an afternoon is one you describe.

The storms are in there, thinly

Storms and rough water appear in 2.1% of September reviews against 0.2% across the year. That is a tenfold difference on a small base: seven reviews, not seventy.

Reading them, two seasons show up. In one year a guest describes being taken off a boat because of an approaching typhoon and praises the crew for how it was handled. Another, weeks later, describes a bay still visibly damaged. In a second year a guest writes about sailing just ahead of a storm and getting back before the authorities closed the water, mentioning other travellers whose trips were cancelled outright.

Seven reviews cannot carry a claim about the climate, and we are not making one. They sit alongside the worst scores and the thinnest volume of the year, and the mechanism is not obscure: this coast sits in the tail of the typhoon season, and when the authorities close the bay nobody sails regardless of what they paid.

What this does not prove

The dates are posting dates. People write reviews days or weeks after getting home, so trips from late August land in the September column and trips from late September land in October. This blunts the finding in both directions and it is the single largest weakness on this page.

The sample is small. Three hundred and thirty-six reviews is the least we hold for any month, and only 285 of those carry enough text to classify. The bad-review rate of 9.8% would still sit above the annual average if it were several points lower, so the direction survives, but do not treat the exact figures as precise.

Low volume has a second explanation. Fewer reviews may mean fewer trips because the bay closed, or it may mean fewer people bothered to write. We cannot separate those two with the data we hold.

What to do about it

If your dates are movable, move them. July and January both score better on our numbers, and the month by month comparison sets all twelve side by side.

If your dates are fixed, the risk is not that your trip is unpleasant. It is that it does not happen. The catch with a closed bay is that it is a decision by the authorities rather than by your operator, so what protects you is the operator’s written policy on cancellation and rescheduling, not their goodwill on the day.

Ask three things before you pay: what happens if the bay closes, whether that means a refund or a reschedule, and who decides. Get the answers in writing. If the boat has a pool or an indoor lounge worth sitting in, that matters more in September than in any other month, which is the practical reading of the cabin figure above.

Common questions

Is September the worst month to visit? On our numbers, yes, by a clear margin on both scores and volume. December is second worst at 6.8% and October third at 6.2%, and both sit far closer to the annual average than September does.

Will my trip definitely be cancelled? No. Most September trips ran and most September guests were happy: nine reviews in ten still sit at three stars or above. The month raises the odds of disruption, it does not guarantee it.

Is travel insurance worth it for September? Twenty-five of the 139 listings we hold mention insurance as included, which means most do not. We are not licensed to advise on insurance and will not, but the question is more live in this month than in any other.

What about early September? The posting-date problem means our September bucket contains late August trips and our October bucket contains late September ones. We cannot resolve the month any finer than this, and anyone who tells you they can with review data is overreaching.
