Ha Long Bay in October: an ordinary month, two traps

Yes, October is a sound month for a Ha Long cruise. On our reviews it sits close to the yearly average once a single bad day on a single boat is set aside. The two things that do go wrong in October are specific enough to check before you pay: the tail of the typhoon season, which in ten years of wind records falls mostly in the first three weeks, and a ticket that says Ha Long for a boat that sails Lan Ha.

The review figures below come from the 529 guest reviews posted in October, out of 8,316 dated reviews we hold for 50 boats, counted on 30 September 2026.

How does October compare with the rest of the year?

October scores a little worse than the average month, and most of the gap comes from one day. As posted, 6.2% of October reviews sit at one or two stars against 5.0% across all twelve months, which puts October third from the bottom behind September and December.

Take those five reviews out and October drops to fourth from the bottom, about a third of a percentage point above the year. Our month by month comparison sets all twelve side by side.

October is also thin. Only September has fewer reviews. In 2023 and 2024 October came in below its own year, at 4.8% against 8.1% and 4.5% against 6.0%, and the month that drags the average down is October 2025, which holds 21 of the 33 low scores.

What went wrong in October 2025?

Two things: one boat’s bad day, and four trips cut short or never started.

On 14 October 2025, five one-star reviews of Peony Cruise went up on the same day. The three with text all say the guests expected Ha Long Bay and were taken elsewhere; two of them name Lan Ha. Peony’s page files it as a Lan Ha boat, and across 292 dated reviews it averages 4.63. Its other 19 October reviews average 4.53, with one low score. Same-day bursts happen in other months too: the largest in our set is nine low scores for a different boat on 18 August 2025.

Four more low reviews describe a trip that was cut or never started, and three blame a typhoon. A Peony guest posting on 4 October had an overnight trip turned into a day cruise that ended at 5 pm because a typhoon was coming. The same day, a guest on another Lan Ha boat wrote that the authorities cut a 24-hour trip to six hours. A three-day trip that began on 3 October lost its second night to what that guest calls Typhoon Paolo. The fourth is a traveller whose flight to Hanoi was cancelled ahead of what they call Typhoon Ragasa, which they date to 26 September 2025, and who writes that they were offered neither a refund nor a new date.

That last case is the one to plan around. What failed was the flight into Hanoi, and a clause about the bay closing would have done nothing for that traveller.

Do October guests write about different things?

Barely. On the 448 October reviews with text we have classified by subject, against 7,094 across the year, the mix is close to the annual one.

A mention is not a complaint, and our booking label misses some cases, so that row is a floor. Take out the three Peony reviews with text and the four storm and closure reviews, and itinerary changes fall to 4.5%, level with the year; booking trouble stays at 4.5% against 3.7%.

Is there still typhoon risk in October?

Yes, and not only at the start. Ten years of ERA5 reanalysis, a model grid about 25 km wide that smooths a storm’s peak below what a station would record, give October 36 days with gusts of 50 km/h or more: 13 in the first ten days, 14 in the middle ten and 9 after the 20th. The strongest was 10 October 2021, and our Ha Long Bay weather by month puts October’s rain and storm days beside the other eleven months. The reviews say less. Storm and typhoon words appear in 4 of the 529 October reviews, about 0.8% against 0.2% across the year, one of them looking back at a September storm. Rain comes up in three, two from late October 2025, and neither of those trips was stopped by it.

The limitation is in the paperwork. The seven cancellation ladders we have recorded set penalties by days before departure, and weather rules sit in separate clauses that sellers write differently. Paradise Vietnam’s weather page, read on 6 August 2026, says the port authority usually makes its call at 3 pm on the day you sail. Leave before that call and nothing is refunded. If you are already at the marina, a full cancellation costs $25 a head for the lunch served while you wait and the rest is refunded; a day-cruise-only permit costs $95 a head; and a two-night trip that loses its second day is billed as one night. Other sellers word it differently, so get your own seller’s rule in writing.

Whatever your October dates, ask by email what a closure on your date means, how much comes back if two nights become one, and whether any of it applies when the bay is open but your flight is cancelled. Our cancellation policy guide shows how far the ordinary ladders differ.

Is early October riskier than late October?

For storms, the reviews point early, while the gust record spreads the risk across the first three weeks. Late October has more low scores: 13 of 186 reviews posted from the 21st, against 8 of 187 in the first ten days and 7 of 151 in the middle ten once the Peony day is removed. Only one of those 13 is about weather; nine name food, cabins, service or luggage, and the counts are too small to call a pattern. The two storm and closure reviews that give dates give 26 September and 3 October.

Trips come first, reviews later. One review posted on 24 October describes a trip on 5 to 7 August. We cannot resolve the month any finer than this.

Will it be crowded in October?

No more than usual. Crowd words show up in 2.8% of October text reviews against 3.0% across the year, and crowding as a subject in 5.6% of classified October reviews against 6.6%.

October guests who mention crowds name the big caves most often, though not only them. One Alisa Premier guest enjoyed Sung Sot less because of the crowds; another on the same boat found the first day’s caves hectic and, on the extra day of a two-night trip, a kayak trip to smaller caves much calmer. Others describe twenty kayaks sharing one small patch of water, and anchorages with twenty to thirty boats moored together.

Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long in October?

Choose the bay for the trip you want, because October barely moves the numbers between them.

Without the Peony day, Lan Ha’s October rate falls to 20 of 348 (5.7%), and its gap over its own year shrinks from 2.2 points to about 0.9. Those 20 include the four storm and closure reviews. We would not choose a bay on them.

The name on the ticket is the trap. Lan Ha trips are routinely called Ha Long: 68 of the 318 October reviews with text on Lan Ha boats call the trip Ha Long and never mention Lan Ha. Lan Ha days centre on swimming and kayaking, Ha Long days on caves, so ask which bay the boat anchors in overnight and which harbour it leaves from. Which boats did guests rate well in October?

Six boats came through October without a single one or two star review on 18 or more reviews. The last row is the most-reviewed boat of the month, with three low scores, for contrast.

Twenty reviews in one month show a boat held up in October, and no more than that. Stellar of the Seas is the strongest case: 37 October reviews without a low score, and an all-year average built on 500. Questions people ask about October

What happens if the bay closes while I am booked? There is no single rule. The penalty ladders we have recorded do not cover it, and the sellers who publish a weather rule do not agree: one bills a two-night trip that loses its second day as one night, another promises only a new arrangement or a refund under each cruise’s policy. Ask your seller by email, and ask separately about a cancelled flight, because that case sits outside a bay closure.

Is it warm enough to swim in October? Modelled sea-surface temperature for October averages 28.3°C over the three years we hold, and guests do swim. One review posted in late October 2025 describes an afternoon swim in water the guest found warm and clear; two others found the water near the anchorages dirty enough to put them off. On air temperature the reviews split: one late-October guest found it a little cold, another waited an hour for a cave in hot sun. Pack for both.

Should I book two nights in October? It depends which risk bothers you more. A second night can buy calmer excursions, as one Alisa Premier guest found, but it also gives a storm more of your trip to take: the October guest who lost a second night to a typhoon says about 20% of the total came back. For two nights at any point in October, get the cut-short refund in writing first.
