Details →Probably not. Across four years of modelled sea data the highest wave of a typical day on the open water off Ha Long was 0.38 m, and only 6 of 9,096 written guest reviews describe feeling unwell on the boat. The motion people do notice comes in the tender and the first hour under way.

Probably not. Waves off Ha Long are small: across 1,553 days of modelled sea data, the highest wave of a typical day was 0.38 m, and the operators that publish where their boats spend the night name moorings among the islands. Of the 9,096 guest reviews with text in our collection, 26 talk about the boat moving and six describe feeling unwell.
The catch is the first hour. Many boats take you out by tender and serve lunch soon after you board, and that is where four of the six reviews from guests who felt unwell place the trouble.
Not very, in any month, at the open-water grid cell we use. These are the daily highest waves there from October 2021 to December 2025, with ten years of gust records beside them. Source: Open-Meteo, ERA5 (ECMWF), a model grid about 25 km across.
| Month | Highest wave, average day | Days a year reaching 1 m | Days a year with gusts of 50 km/h+ |

| March | 0.33 m | 0 | 2.0 |
| April | 0.39 m | 0.5 | 3.3 |

The spread between the calmest month and the liveliest is 11 cm. Aime’e’s operator describes the bay as ringed by islands that break up the swell.
Only 16 of the 1,553 days reached a metre, and 13 of those came with gusts of 60 km/h or more. Eleven fell between July and September. The biggest was 7 September 2024, with 2.88 m and gusts of 185 km/h, the storm two guests named Typhoon Yagi. On days like that you are not out there: the province stops licensing cruise boats, and the four stops on record are in our guide to the 2026 rules.
In the small boat out, and in the first hour. Of the 89 boats whose operator timetables we read between August and October 2026, 32 list a tender ride out to the ship, and La Casta’s operator puts its tender at about 25 minutes. A guest on a different boat, posting in June 2026, wrote that the ship was moored far out, about an hour away by small boat, and that the ride was enough to bring on mild seasickness. Another guest, badly prone to it, struggled visibly on the first day and on the tenders.
On the operator timetables we hold, lunch often comes within the hour of the tender. A German guest posting in January 2026 wrote that lunch came straight after boarding while the ship turned circles, and that her husband felt queasy, then she did too, though she is normally hard to upset. A Vietnamese guest got a headache as the boat first moved off; the crew brought hot ginger tea and a cold towel and offered mild medicine, and about an hour later the guest felt better.
The night is quieter. Aclass, the operator of Stellar of the Seas, lists the usual overnight moorings in Ha Long Bay as the Luon Cave area, Hang Laat, Titop Island, and Trong Cave by Ho Dong Tien, and says boats anchor on heavy chains for the night and move very slowly when they do sail. On a different boat, one guest in 2024 felt dizzy in the corridors as the ship drifted through the night. Three others enjoyed the movement, two of them at night, including a Bai Tu Long guest who found the slight rocking relaxing to sleep to.
Two more reviews describe motion sickness on the road transfer; a Korean guest warns that some limousine seats face backwards.
Very little, and mostly that it never happened. We read every review matching a motion word in English, Vietnamese, German, Spanish, Korean and the other languages our guests write in, and kept the ones about the boat.
| What the guest describes | Reviews |
|---|---|
| Calm water, no trouble | 17 |
| Rocking, and enjoyed it | 3 |
| Felt unwell or dizzy | 6 |
| All reviews about the boat’s motion | 26 of 9,096 |
Six is too few to show a pattern by bay or by month.
The calm ones are specific. An Alisa Premier guest posting in January 2025 had no waves and no seasickness. An Emeraude Classic guest wrote in 2024 that apart from the engine and the water you barely notice you are moving. A Renea guest posting in August 2026, travelling with children of three and five, had worried about seasickness on the wooden junk and found it very stable.
Hull type does not separate these reviews. All five boats behind the six unwell reviews are steel, as are 71 of the 87 boats on our list with a recorded hull. Our wood or steel guide covers what the hull does change.
It changes how long you spend under way. On Alisa Premier’s one-night timetable both first-afternoon stops, Sung Sot at 14:30 and Luon Cave at 15:30, are in Ha Long Bay. On our list, 44 of the 46 Lan Ha boats leave from Tuan Chau on the Ha Long side, so their first afternoon includes the run across to Lan Ha. Since 1 April 2026 four licensed routes also carry overnight boats between the two bays; the bay comparison explains them.
Reaching Lan Ha through Cat Ba island adds a crossing of its own. localvietnam.com describes the Hai Phong car ferry as about 20 minutes on water that is usually calm, and the hydrofoil from Ben Binh and the ferry from Tuan Chau as longer runs over open water that can turn choppy in poor weather. Ambassador’s own Lan Ha guide says the same of ferries and speedboats.
Some carry basics, and it is worth asking before you board. Aime’e’s operator says the boat holds basic medication but advises bringing your own. Mon Cheri’s tips suggest ginger tea. Ambassador’s FAQ compares the water to a lake and still suggests packing tablets. The guest who struggled on the tenders wrote that she was offered a tablet only on the second day.
Whether to take anything, and what, is a question for your doctor or pharmacist. Bai Tho Junks’ family guide tells parents of motion-sensitive children the same.
In our view, Alisa Premier or Emeraude Classic for a short first day inside Ha Long Bay, and Renea if you would like a small wooden boat. Scores are the share of five-star reviews among those we have collected, counted 22 October 2026.
| Boat | Bay | Reviews | Five-star | Why it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alisa Premier | Ha Long | 393 | 92.1% | Both first-day stops in Ha Long Bay, the last at 15:30 |
| Emeraude Classic | Ha Long | 391 | 90.0% | A Ha Long Bay route: Titop and a pearl farm on day one, Sung Sot next morning |
| Renea | Bai Tu Long | 259 | 89.2% | Small wooden junks a parent found very stable |
None of the three avoids the first hour. Alisa Premier and Renea take you out by tender, and all three serve lunch while the boat is moving; what the two Ha Long boats shorten is the rest of the afternoon under way.
The limitation is company on the two Ha Long boats. Reading guest reviews by tone, our quietest-bay guide ranks Ha Long the busiest of the three bays, so if a quiet night matters more to you than a short sail, look elsewhere.
Is Ha Long Bay rougher in winter? Barely. At the open-water grid cell we use, no day from January to March reached a metre across four winters, and the highest wave of an average day was 0.39 m in January, 0.42 m in February and 0.33 m in March. Winter’s drawbacks are cold and cloud, with January highs averaging 19.5°C; the weather guide has the rest. The days that did reach a metre came mostly between July and September, with storms.
Will I feel the boat moving at night? Probably very little, because overnight boats spend the night moored among the islands. Of the 26 reviews in our collection that talk about the boat’s movement, one describes dizziness as the ship drifted overnight, two describe a gentle night-time rocking the guests enjoyed, and three say they felt little or nothing once the boat had anchored. If you are sensitive, the tender ride out and the first hour of sailing over lunch are the times to watch.
What happens if a storm comes? The boats stop. When a storm approaches, Quang Ninh’s authorities stop licensing cruise boats from a set hour; in two of the four stops on record, boats already out were allowed until a stated hour to reach shelter. Rough days are rare in the sea record: 16 of 1,553 reached a metre. Our 2026 rules guide lists all four stops, and the cancellation policy guide covers what you get back.
Should I take seasickness tablets? Ask your doctor or pharmacist. Several operators suggest packing something if you are prone to motion sickness, and one guest was offered a tablet only on the second day. Before booking, ask the operator whether the boat carries anything and whether it boards by tender.
Review counts cover 10,058 reviews of 74 boats, counted on 22 October 2026 with hidden reviews and reviews of other businesses removed; 9,096 carry text. Review dates are posting dates. Sea figures are Open-Meteo, ERA5 (ECMWF), reanalysis on a grid about 25 km across, which smooths the extremes.

Details →We pulled ten years of daily weather for one grid point in the bay and set it beside 10,058 guest reviews. Rain falls where the usual calendar puts it, May to September. The strong-wind days spread from July to October, and September holds fewer of them than you would guess.
Choosing a bayThree names, one body of water, and a decision most people make by accident. What actually differs between them, from the itineraries of the 92 boats we publish.
Choosing a bayCount how often guests mention crowds and Bai Tu Long comes out worst, at more than one review in ten. Read what they actually say and it comes out best. The gap between those two readings is the whole answer.
Around the cruiseFour licensed routes now carry overnight boats from Ha Long into Lan Ha, storms closed the bay to cruise boats on 3 July and 22 August, and the sightseeing fees have a new collector. Here is what each change means for the trip you are booking.
