Getting there

What time Ha Long cruises board and return

Most Ha Long boats want you at their lounge by 11:30 and put you back on the quay at about 11:00 the next morning. Here is the clock for a one-night trip, from the timetables operators publish for 89 of the 92 boats we list.

halongtrip crew·Updated ·9 min read·Part of Hanoi to Ha Long: every route, and the costs

Plan to be at your operator’s lounge by 11:30, on the boat by about 12:00, and back on the quay at roughly 11:00 the next morning. That is the usual clock for a one-night Ha Long cruise, and the boarding end of it varies little. Of the 92 boats we publish, 89 have a timetable printed on the operator’s own website, and 78 of the 86 that give a boarding time put it between 11:45 and 12:30.

The spread that does exist sits at the ends of the trip: when the shuttle collects you in Hanoi, how firm the lounge cut-off is, and whether your second morning ends at 10:00 or after midday.

What time does a Ha Long cruise leave?

Around noon. Each milestone is counted from the 89 operator timetables read between 6 August and 14 October 2026, using the first time of any printed range, and each row carries its own count of boats.

Put boarding and landing together and a one-night cruise lasts about 23 hours from the moment you step aboard. Across the 71 boats that print both times, the span runs from 21 hours 45 minutes on Paradise Elegance, which takes guests ashore at 10:15, to 24 hours on La Casta and La Casta Regal, where guests board at 11:30 and land at 11:30 the next day.

Lunch comes about an hour after boarding: the median printed lunch is 13:00, against 12:00 for boarding. On some boats the cabin comes later: Genesis Regal prints cabin check-in at 13:45, after lunch, and Erina at 14:00, so keep anything you need for the first afternoon in a day bag.

Does the harbour change the clock?

Only a little on the way out, and more on the way home. Sixty-eight of the boats we publish leave from Tuan Chau and twenty-two from the Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay; which harbour you leave from covers the meeting points themselves.

The late return from the international port comes mostly from the four Indochina Junk boats and Oriental Sails, whose shuttles reach Hanoi at 16:00–16:30; Hanoi to Ha Long has the shuttle times boat by boat.

The single Hon Gai boat, Paloma, boards at about 12:30 like the port boats, but lands later, at 11:30–11:45, and its shuttle is back in Hanoi at 16:00–16:30. Venezia is the exception. She boards by tender at Beo Harbour in Cat Ba town, and guests staying on the island are collected from their Cat Ba hotel between 11:20 and 11:45.

How early does the second morning start?

Cabin check-out is 09:00–09:30 on most boats: fifty-two of the 66 that print a check-out time want the cabin back in that half hour. Twenty-two print a brunch or early lunch before landing. Oriental Sails serves its day-two lunch at 10:50.

Where the boats differ is when you leave the water. Fourteen of the 72 boats with a landing time have you ashore by 10:30. Au Co, Bhaya Classic and Bhaya Soul print 10:00, and the three Paradise boats print 10:15–10:30. At the other end, seventeen land at 11:30 or later: Doria’s guests leave the ship at 11:15 and reach the marina at 12:10, Cozy Bay Grand disembarks at 11:45, and Nostalgia docks at Tuan Chau between 11:00 and 11:45 after a 09:45–10:00 check-out.

The catch on Doria and Cozy Bay Grand is a later return to Hanoi: Doria’s shuttle reaches the city at 15:30–16:00 and Cozy Bay Grand’s at about 16:00. In our view the early-landing boats suit anyone with an onward bus or an afternoon connection, as long as the operator’s return time fits.

What flight can I catch on day two?

In our opinion, an evening one. The operator shuttles that print a return time reach Hanoi between 14:00 and 16:30, median 14:30, and Noi Bai airport is a further run beyond the city. If you must fly the same afternoon, a private car straight from the harbour to the airport is the way to do it; Hanoi to Ha Long compares shuttles, private cars and what each costs.

The arrival day is harder. Most lounges expect you by 11:30, and the shuttles leave Hanoi around 08:00 to make it. Landing at Noi Bai the same morning and joining a midday boat leaves no margin, so we would arrive in Hanoi the day before.

What happens if you arrive late?

On some boats, you lose the trip. The lounge time is a cut-off on several operators’ terms, and the tender or speedboat runs to the ship’s schedule.

  • Majesty Prime and Genesis Regal ask guests who arrive on their own to be at lounge No. 19 before 11:30, and treat anyone later as a no-show without refund.
  • Ginger’s speedboat leaves at 11:30 sharp, according to Heritage Line’s embarkation guide, and a late arrival may be refused boarding with the full fare charged, or pay extra for a separate transfer out to the ship. The lounge opens at 10:00.
  • Rosy asks for 11:30–11:45 at the lounge and charges US$100 for a separate speedboat if you miss the group.
  • Sea Stars wants guests checked in before 11:15, a quarter of an hour earlier than most.

Paradise Grand moves its window with the season: check-in on Tuan Chau runs 11:30–12:00, or 11:00–12:00 in summer. If you are driving yourself or hiring a car, give the driver the lounge time as the arrival time and leave Hanoi by about 08:00.

Does a three-day trip keep the same times?

Often, yes. Several operators print one landing time for both trip lengths: La Regina Grand and La Regina Royal land at 11:00, Paradise Elegance at 10:15–10:30, Verdure Lotus Classic at 11:00–11:15.

Where they differ, it is worth knowing before you book a car. Emeraude Classic boards three-day guests at 12:30–12:45, fifteen minutes later than one-night guests, and lands them around 10:30 on the last day, half an hour earlier. Syrena boards at 12:30 for one night and 12:45 for two, and Unicharm asks three-day guests to reach Tuan Chau at 11:45–12:00 against 11:30. Paloma runs the other way, boarding three-day guests at about 11:30 and one-night guests at about 12:30. Whether the extra night is worth it is a separate question, covered in two days or three.

Which boat fits your plans for day two?

Paradise Grand for an early finish, Nostalgia for a slower second morning, Orchid Trendy for the earliest start of the four, with the speedboat out at 11:45–12:00, and Renea on the Bai Tu Long side. All four print a full one-night clock on their own sites.

Boat Bay At the lounge Out to the boat Check-out Back ashore
Paradise Grand Lan Ha 11:30–12:00 (summer 11:00–12:00) 12:00–12:30 by speedboat 09:30–10:00 10:15–10:30
Nostalgia Lan Ha 11:00–11:30 12:00 09:45–10:00 11:00–11:45
Orchid Trendy Lan Ha 11:00–11:30 11:45–12:00 by speedboat 09:30–10:00, with brunch 11:00–11:30
Renea Bai Tu Long 12:00, at the operator’s office 12:30 09:15 10:45–11:30

Paradise Grand’s 10:15 landing is the earliest among the Lan Ha Bay boats that print one, which makes it the pick for an onward connection on day two. Nostalgia gives you the most of that last morning of the four and still has its shuttle back in Hanoi at 14:30–15:00, early enough for an evening flight. Orchid Trendy serves lunch from 12:45 on the first day, and guests who book the operator’s transfer are back in Hanoi by 14:30–15:00. Renea leaves from the international port, the usual harbour for Bai Tu Long, yet still has guests back in Hanoi between 14:30 and 15:30, ahead of the 16:00–16:30 that the Indochina Junk boats print.

Common questions

What time should I leave Hanoi for a Ha Long cruise? By about 08:00. That is the median pick-up time across the 52 boats that print one, and 26 of them say exactly 08:00, because the drive is roughly two and a half hours and most lounges expect you by 11:30. If you are arranging your own car, treat the printed lounge time as the latest you can arrive, since Majesty Prime, Genesis Regal and Ginger all treat late guests as no-shows or may refuse boarding.

What time do Ha Long cruises finish? Around 11:00 on the second day. Seventy-two boats print a landing time, from 10:00 at the earliest to 12:10 at the latest, and 26 of them say 11:00. Cabin check-out comes first, at 09:00–09:30 on 52 of the 66 boats that print it, and 22 boats print a brunch or early lunch before you land. The earliest landings are Au Co, Bhaya Classic and Bhaya Soul at 10:00; the latest is Doria, at the marina by 12:10.

Can I catch a flight from Hanoi on the day the cruise ends? An evening flight, yes. Operator shuttles that print a return reach Hanoi between 14:00 and 16:30, median 14:30, across 31 boats, and most boats have you ashore around 11:00. For an afternoon flight, book a private car straight from the harbour to Noi Bai so you skip the drop-offs in the city, and check the car’s pick-up time against your boat’s printed landing time.

Is check-in time the same as boarding time? No. Check-in happens at the operator’s lounge on shore, most often at 11:30 (36 of the 72 boats that print it), and boarding follows about half an hour later when the tender or speedboat takes you out, most often at 12:00. On a few boats, such as Genesis Regal and Erina, the cabin itself is handed over only in the early afternoon, at 13:45 and 14:00.
