Which harbour your Ha Long cruise leaves from

The harbour barely appears in most cruise listings, tucked below the price and the cabin photos, and it deserves more attention than it gets. Where you board decides two things you will feel: how long you sit in a car getting there, and which stretch of water you actually sail. Of the seventy boats we track, forty-two name their harbour. The other twenty-eight do not, and that silence is its own problem, which we come to below.

The three harbours, and who uses them

Tuan Chau Marina is the hub, and it is not close: thirty-four of the forty-two boats that name a harbour sail from it, and between them they cover Lan Ha Bay and Ha Long Bay. If you have booked a Lan Ha cruise, you are almost certainly leaving from Tuan Chau. It is the busiest marina in the region and the one your transfer will most often aim for.

The harbour that decides your bay

The sharpest fact in the table is the smallest row. Every boat we track that sails from Hon Gai Pier goes to Bai Tu Long Bay, and no boat from any other harbour makes Bai Tu Long its home water in the same way. Hon Gai is not a general-purpose port that happens to include Bai Tu Long. In our data it is the Bai Tu Long gateway and nothing else.

That turns the harbour into a shortcut. If a listing is vague about the bay but names Hon Gai as the departure point, you are almost certainly looking at a Bai Tu Long trip, which is the quietest and least crowded of the three bays. Why the drive changes with the harbour

All three harbours sit around Ha Long City, three to four hours from Hanoi by road, so the harbour will not save you the long transfer. What it changes is the last stretch and the meeting point, and a transfer booked for the wrong harbour is a real way to start a trip badly. This is worth pinning down precisely, because only three of 139 listings include the Hanoi transfer in the fare at all, so most people are arranging their own car and need to give the driver a correct destination. The catch, and what we cannot see

Twenty-eight of the seventy boats do not publish a departure harbour, and for those twenty-eight we cannot tell you where you board. A boat missing from the table above has an unknown harbour, not no harbour, and it is wrong to read the silence as anything else. It does mean the harbour patterns here rest on the forty-two boats that say, four of them at Hon Gai and thirty-four at Tuan Chau, so treat the Hon Gai rule as strong within our data rather than as a law of the whole fleet.

There is a smaller limit too. Harbours occasionally change, a marina closes for works, a berth moves, and a listing can lag behind reality by a season. The harbour on your own confirmation, checked close to departure, is the one that will actually meet your car.

Common questions

Does the harbour change how far I drive from Hanoi? Not by much. All three sit around Ha Long City, three to four hours out. What changes is the exact meeting point, so a transfer booked to the wrong harbour is the risk, not the distance.

If I want Bai Tu Long, what should I look for? A boat sailing from Hon Gai Pier. Every Hon Gai boat in our data goes to Bai Tu Long, so the harbour is a reliable tell even when the listing is vague about the bay.

My listing does not name a harbour. What does that mean? That it is one of the twenty-eight that stay silent. It is not a red flag on its own, but it is worth asking, because the harbour sets your meeting point and hints at your bay.

Is Tuan Chau better than the others? It is not better, it is bigger. Thirty-four of forty-two named boats use it, so it is where most Lan Ha and Ha Long trips begin. Busy is not the same as good, and the boat matters more than the marina.
