Aspira is a 22-cabin steel boat on the Cat Ba side of the water at about $145 each for two sharing, with a balcony or terrace on every cabin, a seasonal pool, a jacuzzi and a free gym. That fare is low enough to make the booking look like an easy yes. Read the section on guest complaints below before you say it.

The cabins are generous for the price. The operator’s cabin plan puts ten Junior Suites on the first deck and eight Senior Suites on the second, all 32 m² with a balcony. At the top sit two Executive Suites at the stern of the second deck and two Presidential Suites at its bow, each 55 m² with a sun terrace. Aspira works Lan Ha. The operator says the gym is free to use, and massage costs extra. Kayaking is included and confirmed. That deserves its own sentence, because kayaking is the inclusion most quietly dropped between the listing and the morning.

What a cabin actually costs

The rates below are the highest per-cabin figures on the halongbaytours.com listing, read on 6 August 2026, so a quote may come in under them. Per cabin, two people, one night: the junior suite at $290, the senior suite at $330, the executive at $430, the president suite at $470.

Halve the cheapest cabin and you get $145 each for two sharing, which is where we would start planning.

A guest who booked the presidential room in December 2023 writes that it cost US$600 a night and covered the room and nothing else. The number that binds is the one on your own confirmation. Rates on this boat move with season and agent. Ask for the total, in writing, with the inclusions listed.

What do unhappy guests say about Aspira?

The low reviews are specific, and the complaint that comes back most often is the ship itself. One writes that the boat is dated and not well maintained, with a damp smell in the towels, a hole in a bed sheet, and drainage odour in most of the rooms their group had booked. A family with several cabins found two of them, numbered 202 and 204, close to uninhabitable for the smell of sewer gas. A two-star guest says the ship was noticeably older than the photographs suggested. Our boat-age guide lists what to ask.

The other cluster is money. Two guests describe a steady push to sell extras, one of them at shopping stops on the road transfer, and a third was refused the loan of a wine glass. Another found the shuttle arrangement at the pier inefficient enough to name it as their main complaint.

Go and read the one-star reviews on Google before you book. Twenty minutes will tell you whether these are failures you can absorb.

None of that cancels the good record, which is large and consistent about two things. The kitchen is praised in review after review, including a five-course dinner that several guests single out. So is the road transfer from Hanoi, the communication before departure, and the guides. More than one party reports being upgraded on arrival without asking.

Route and pier

The itinerary reaches over to Tra Bau, the village at Viet Hai, the beach at Three Peaches, the Bright and Dark caves, and Cat Ba island itself. That is a fuller second day than the fare suggests, and it is the argument for two nights rather than one.

Boarding is at Lot 07, Tuan Chau Marina, where you reach the lounge between 11:30 and 12:15; you are back on the quay at about 11:30 the next day. The operator runs its own eight-seat van from the Hanoi Old Quarter every morning, at extra cost; Origin Vietnam quoted the round trip at $30 a guest in August 2026. Give your driver the lot number as well as the marina name.

Who it suits

Travellers who want the Cat Ba side at the cheap end, who will plan against the cabin table, and who care more about what arrives at dinner than about the state of the bathroom grouting. On that footing it holds its place among the Lan Ha boats and on the best-value list. If the bay itself is still open, read how the three bays differ first.

Who should look elsewhere

Anyone buying a suite here. A $470 cabin on a boat this inconsistent is a worse purchase than a $290 one.

Where these facts come from

The cabin plan, sizes and decks, the pool, the gym and the van are from the operator’s site, aspiracruises.com, read on 10 August 2026; three sources give the same 22 cabins. The pier, times, steel hull and prices are from halongbaytours.com and besthalongcruises.com, read on 6 August 2026. Guest remarks are from Google reviews.

Why people book Aspira

Book it if

  • You are budgeting against $290 a cabin for two on one night, about $145 each for two sharing
  • The Cat Ba side of the archipelago is what you came for, and a jacuzzi, spa and gym on board are worth an uneven hotel operation
  • You will get the suite grade and the full total in writing before any money moves

Our read

Our view is that the food and the road transfer are the strong parts of this booking and the ship itself is the weak one. At $145 a head that is a reasonable trade. At the suite prices, we think you are paying for a promise the boat does not keep.

The review-count bar is on a log scale: the boats we can score run from 1 review to 515, so a straight scale would squash almost everything against the left edge.

2.0× the median review count

This is not our score. It is the aggregate across the listings we track, and shows where Aspira Cruise sits against the 108 boats we can score: a median of9.5 on 87 reviews. Scores in this bay cluster near the top (8–9.9), which is why we show you the review count as well.

That number is what we collected and read. The score beside it is the average the listings publish, computed on 105.

Good to know

Who should look at something else
  • A drainage smell in the cabin would end the trip; guests report it repeatedly, one family naming rooms 202 and 204 as close to uninhabitable
  • You need the ship to look like its photographs; guests paying five-star money describe a boat that is dated and patchily maintained
  • You are paying for a suite and expect it to feel like one; a guest who paid US$600 a night for the Presidential Suite in December 2023 found it covered the room and nothing else
