How much a Ha Long Bay cruise really costs

The number you see first is designed to look small. Across the 82 boats we publish that have a two-day rate sheet, half the cheapest cabin for two on a two-day, one-night cruise runs from $105 to $423 per person, two sharing, and the median is $155 (sheets read between 6 August and 14 October 2026). That is a real range, and it is also the softest number in this whole guide.

It is soft for three reasons, and each one moves the true cost in the same direction: up.

The advertised figure is per person, and it is the floor

Every rate on that $105 to $423 scale is the cheapest cabin on the sheet, split between two people. Book the same boat as a couple and you pay twice the figure for the cheapest cabin, and more for any better one.

We hold two prices for these boats and it matters which one you are reading. One is the per-person figure above. The other is a per-cabin rate, read off a rate card. On our pages the first is the second halved, for two people sharing one night. Rosy’s cheapest cabin, a junior suite, is $310 a night, so it shows as $155 a person. Orchid Premium’s cheapest cabin for two is $580 a night, which comes to $290 each, and a third guest or a solo booking breaks that division in ways only the operator can price.

Neither is wrong. They answer different questions. The trouble starts when a comparison site lines up one boat’s per-person floor against another’s per-cabin rate and calls it a saving.

What the fare does not carry

A cruise fare in Ha Long is narrower than it looks, and the clearest evidence is the transfer from Hanoi. Of 139 listings we read, three put the road transfer in writing as included. The expressway drive is about two and a half hours, but a shared shuttle collecting from hotels takes about three and a half each way, and for most travellers it is the single largest cost that never appears in the headline price.

The rest of the bill is built the same way. Taxes and service charges are named separately on 22 of the 139 listings, travel insurance on 25, and personal expenses are spelled out as excluded on only two, which tells you how rarely the paperwork bothers. None of that means a boat is cheating you. It means the fare covers the nights on the water and leaves the edges to you.

The edges show up in the reviews. Money and worth is a subject in 7% of all the reviews we classified, but in 31% of the one and two star ones. Paying extra on board appears in 5% overall and in 28% of the bad reviews. Read together, the pattern is not that boats are expensive. It is that the bill arrives in parts, and the part that lands on board, unannounced, is the one guests remember.

What the third day costs

The obvious question is whether three days costs proportionally more than two, and on the rates we could read it does, almost exactly. One listing prints cabin rates for both lengths on 66 of the boats we publish. Read between 6 August and 8 October 2026 and matched grade by grade, the whole three-day trip comes to a median of 1.94 times the two-day price, so the second night costs about 94% of the first. That is one listing’s published rate, and your own quote will depend on your dates. The ratio holds across the fleet: even the narrowest gap, on Nostalgia, leaves the second night at about three quarters of the first. The two days or three guide sets out what that money buys.

Where the money actually goes, by band

Group the boats by their per-person floor and the bad-review rate does fall as you climb. Look at who sits in each band before reading much into it.

One boat does most of the work in the top row. Stellar of the Seas, at $366 a person, holds 499 of the 1,229 reviews in that band and not one of them gives one or two stars. Set it aside and the other six boats at $200 and up come to 6.2%, half a point under the cheapest band and above the middle one. Money comes up in a similar share of reviews at every price, between 6.0% and 7.5%, and as a complaint it sits at 3.1% under $150 and 2.6% in the middle band. The top band’s 2.0% is Stellar again: without it, 3.2%. On these numbers the price band predicts little, and our ranking by guest record is built boat by boat for that reason.

The catch

The catch is that the review bands lean towards boats with a long public record. They draw on the 47 priced boats in our classified review set, which leaves out several of the newest and most exclusive, Elite of the Seas at $402 a person among them. Ten more boats we publish are sold on price on request and sit outside the bands.

The subject labels are machine-assigned and we scored them before trusting them, at 89% precision and 84% recall against a set we labelled by hand. Money is one of two labels that came out weaker than the rest, so where this page says 31% of bad reviews raised worth, read it as at least 31%. And a per-person floor is only a floor. We record half the cheapest cabin on a sheet read between 6 August and 14 October 2026; the rate you are quoted for a specific date and cabin is a number only the operator holds, and it is usually higher.

Common questions

Why is the boat so much cheaper on one site than another? Usually because one site is showing a per-person floor and the other a per-cabin rate, or the same boat at a different occupancy. What is the single biggest hidden cost? The Hanoi transfer, on the evidence. Three listings in 139 include it in writing, and it is a six to eight hour round trip. Ask whether it is in your fare and in what kind of vehicle before you book anything else.

Is a $300 boat twice as good as a $150 one? No measure we hold says so. Boats at $200 a person and up drew one or two stars in 3.7% of the reviews we classified, against 6.7% under $150, but Stellar of the Seas alone accounts for most of that gap. Without it the dearer boats sit at 6.2%. Complaints about value hardly change with price either (3.1% under $150, 3.2% on the dearer boats other than Stellar), so judge a boat on its own record.

Should I hold out for a three-day trip? Decide on the itinerary, and budget for close to double. On the rates one listing published for 66 boats, read between 6 August and 8 October 2026, the three-day trip came to a median of 1.94 times the two-day price for the same cabin.
