Orchid Classic is a line of fourteen-suite steel boats on Lan Ha (guests write of Classic 1, 2 and 3), and every suite has a private balcony and a bathtub. The smallest is 36 m². She boards at Lot 32, Tuan Chau Marina, and the second morning takes you ashore on Cat Ba Island to Trung Trang Cave. On the halongbaytours.com listing read on 6 August 2026, the Suite Balcony for two was $330 for the night: from $165 per person, two sharing.

Orchid Cruises, part of the Pelican group, sells four lines under nearly the same name: Classic, Trendy, Premium and Luxury. One guest opens their review by spelling out that what follows applies to the Classic only. Get the boat name, and the Classic number, on your confirmation. Listings date the Classic to November 2016.

Which suite should you book?

The Suite Balcony. There are eight of them on the first deck, 36 m² each. The four Premium Suite Balconies on the second deck are the same size, one deck up, for $50 more a night on the same rate sheet. The two Orchid Exclusive Suites, also on the second deck, are 45 m² with a round king bed. Families of four take two connected suites, 72 m² between them, on either deck.

The second deck holds the restaurant, the first deck the spa, and the sundeck a jacuzzi and a sky bar. Massage and the sauna cost extra. Wi-Fi is free and drops out at sea.

What does Orchid Classic cost?

The halongbaytours.com sheet read on 6 August 2026 prices each cabin for two on the one-night trip: Suite Balcony $330, Premium Suite Balcony $380, Orchid Exclusive Suite $480. A Suite Balcony with three in it is $490, and the family suites are $630 for three and $680 for four. The two-night trip is priced for the whole stay, at $610, $680 and $890 for the doubles. Two people sharing the Suite Balcony pay $165 each for one night.

One guest gives a real total: $1,200 for two people for two nights, about double the sheet. Plan around a written quote. The fare covers meals, an English-speaking guide, the cooking demonstration, tai chi, squid fishing, a welcome drink, water in the cabin, insurance, sightseeing fees and VAT. Drinks, massage and the road from Hanoi are extra, and paying by card adds a surcharge.

Then there is the bar. A guest who otherwise liked the room and the crew gave two stars mostly over drinks pricing, and listed it: a piña colada at $20, a mango smoothie at $20, a mimosa at $20, sparkling water at $7. Those are one guest’s figures on one night, but they are specific enough to budget against.

Where does Orchid Classic go?

Into Lan Ha Bay, on a programme the operator publishes. Lunch is from 12:45 as she leaves Tuan Chau. At 14:45 she reaches Ao Ech, the lagoon the operator calls Frog Pond, and she spends the night in the Tra Bau area. The next morning a bus takes you from the jetty at 07:40 to Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba. Cabins are cleared between 09:30 and 10:00 over brunch, and you are back at Tuan Chau between 11:00 and 11:30.

The two-night trip puts a day boat between those two days. You cycle through Viet Hai village (an electric car costs extra), eat lunch on the day boat, swim in a lagoon, and are back on Orchid Classic at four. A guest who liked the boat and took one night found the schedule tight and uneven: a short kayak to a beach, a long wait for dinner, then 45 rushed minutes for the cave the next morning. Our guide to two days or three weighs the extra night.

Where do you board, and at what time?

At the Orchid lounge on Lot 32, Tuan Chau Marina. Check in between 11:00 and 11:30, and the speedboat takes you out at about noon. The operator’s shared limousine costs $45 a person for the round trip and collects from Old Quarter hotels between 07:50 and 08:20; be downstairs at the start of that window. Which harbour you leave from explains why the lot number matters.

What do guests complain about?

Two separate guests flag how heavily the menu leans on seafood. Both say the kitchen found alternatives when asked, and one adds that a pregnancy notified in advance was handled properly, so the issue is the default, and the kitchen is willing. Three guests report falling ill after meals; one says several passengers, his wife among them, missed a whole morning of activities. One found the room clean on top and dirty underneath the bed. One found the crew so attentive it became oppressive. One had a rude driver on the road transfer.

What if you cancel, or the weather does?

The operator’s own terms, read on 14 October 2026, apply to every Orchid booking. For up to three rooms, cancelling 30 days or more ahead is free; from 29 to 15 days you lose 50%, from 14 to 7 days 70%, and inside a week the full fare. No-shows get nothing back. If the authorities stop the trip before you leave Hanoi you get a full refund; once you are in Ha Long or aboard, you pay for what you used and the rest is refunded. Our cancellation guide sets these terms against the others.

Who it suits

Two people who want a small boat with a big bathroom, who will take the two-night trip, who eat fish and who will settle the bar prices before they go. It is on the best-value list and among the small boats. If you are still choosing between the bays, start here.

Who should book something else

Anyone who cannot absorb a surprise on the bill. Drinks at those prices, a card surcharge and a $45 transfer each are how a $610 two-night trip for two becomes a much bigger one.

Facts on this page come from orchidcruises.com (read 10 August and 14 October 2026) and the halongbaytours.com, besthalongcruises.com and halongbaycruises.com listings read on 6 August 2026.

Our read

Orchid Classic is a line of fourteen-suite steel boats on the Cat Ba side, and the guests who write about them mostly liked the trip. The soft spot is everything around the boat: the transfer, the bar tab and which Orchid boat you have actually bought. Get the name Classic, and its number, on your confirmation.

The review-count bar is on a log scale: the boats we can score run from 1 review to 515, so a straight scale would squash almost everything against the left edge.

4.1× the median review count

This is not our score. It is the aggregate across the listings we track, and shows where Orchid Classic Cruise sits against the 108 boats we can score: a median of9.5 on 87 reviews. Scores in this bay cluster near the top (8–9.9), which is why we show you the review count as well.

That number is what we collected and read. The score beside it is the average the listings publish, computed on 515.

Good to know

Who should look at something else
  • A drinks bill matters to you; one guest lists a $20 cocktail, a $20 smoothie and $7 sparkling water
  • You want a hands-off crew; more than one guest describes staff hovering constantly and means it as a complaint
  • You are travelling alone; the operator prices each room for one or two, so a solo traveller pays the full cabin rate
