Bai Tu Long Bay cruises: the small, quiet end

Fifteen of the 92 boats we publish sail Bai Tu Long. Forty-six sail Lan Ha. That ratio is the whole argument for the bay and most of the argument against it.

A median Bai Tu Long boat carries fourteen cabins against twenty-three or twenty-four next door, which is roughly eighteen fewer people sharing your sundeck, your tender and your anchorage. The saving is small: the median boat here starts from $144 per person, two sharing, $11 under Lan Ha.

Five of the fifteen Bai Tu Long boats are wooden, against three of forty-six on Lan Ha. If the look of a timber boat is part of why you are coming, this is where they are.

The pier is different, so confirm it

Twelve of the fifteen Bai Tu Long boats leave from the Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay, not from Tuan Chau Marina, where forty-four of the forty-six Lan Ha boats board (counted 14 October 2026).

The cruise port is a different part of Ha Long City. If you have booked a shuttle to the marina because that is what the internet told you, you are in the wrong place, and the boat does not wait. Confirm the pier by name.

Two Bai Tu Long boats board at Tuan Chau: Emperor, which moved its route here from Ha Long in October 2026 and kept its Tuan Chau berth, and Violet. One, Paloma, leaves from Hon Gai Pier. Of the twelve at the international port, Swan is one of only two boats in this bay with the 100 reviews our ranking needs (82.4% five stars across 239), and the other, Renea, leaves from the same port. Ao Tien port, on the Van Don side of the bay, is another way into Bai Tu Long, but for sightseeing boats. The province opened those routes on 29 March 2025, one of them out to Ban Sen island and Nha Tro cave (Bao Quang Ninh, 29 March 2025). None of the fifteen overnight boats in our data leaves from Ao Tien. If an operator names it for an overnight trip, get that in writing, because a car booked to Bai Chay or Tuan Chau will not take you there.

Thien Canh Son is on all fourteen stop lists we hold for this bay, which makes it a default. It is a small dry cave with a stairway up to it, nothing like the scale of Sung Sot in Ha Long, and nobody would put it on a poster. That is the point of the bay in one stop.

Cong Dam and Cap La are the stops that need a longer sail, which is why they cluster on the three-day itineraries. If those names are why you are booking, check the length of the trip before the price.

What you give up is Sung Sot, Titop and Viet Hai village. Those are Ha Long and Lan Ha stops, and no Bai Tu Long boat in our set lists them. Our caves and islands guide has the counts for all three bays.

What guests say, with a warning attached

Bai Tu Long guests write about the water more than anyone else. Kayaking or swimming comes up in 16.3% of their reviews against 12.9% in Lan Ha and 5.9% in Ha Long.

That fits the itineraries. There is no famous cave to queue for, so the day is built around being on and in the water instead.

The warning is sample size. Our Bai Tu Long review themes rest on 570 written reviews across seven boats, against 4,651 across twenty-nine for Lan Ha. Seven businesses is not a category, and one boat having a strong year moves the whole bay figure. Treat the 16.3% as a direction rather than a measurement.

The rate of one and two star reviews is 5.8% here against 4.8% in Lan Ha, which is a difference small enough that we would not act on it.

Which is the best Bai Tu Long Bay cruise?

On the reviews we have read, Renea. Of its 259 ratings, 89.2% are five stars and 3.5% are one or two, which puts it ninth of the 32 boats in our ranking across all three bays. That ranking counts only reviews we collected ourselves, and admits a boat once it has 100 of them spread over at least twelve months. Swan is the only other Bai Tu Long boat that qualifies.

Renea is the best of a very short list. Five of the fifteen boats in this bay carry 20 or more star ratings in our collection from their Bai Tu Long sailings. Four more carry between one and eight each, which makes 702 ratings across nine boats, two boats more than the written reviews behind the themes above. Emperor has 97 of its own, but every one was posted before the move and describes its old Ha Long circuit, so we count them for Ha Long. For Dragon’s Pearl, Paloma, Prince, Red Dragon and Treasure we collected no reviews at all.

Renea and Signature list the same $260 for their cheapest cabin for two, so price does not separate them. Both are wooden, two of the five wooden boats in the bay, so the hull does not separate them either. Five of Signature’s 38 reviews are one or two stars, and at 38 reviews each one moves its share by about two and a half points, too few to say whether that is a pattern. At that price we would book Renea. Swan, at $270, has the bay’s second-largest set of reviews, 239, with 5.0% at one or two stars; it is the fallback if Renea is full on your date.

The bay’s two dearest boats sit outside this table, which ranks on guest reviews. Prince lists its cheapest cabin for two at $499 (originvietnam.com, read 14 October 2026) and Dragon Legend at $400 (6 August 2026); Prince is a four-cabin wooden junk and Dragon Legend a 24-cabin steel boat. The catch

Fewer boats means fewer options, and it bites in two ways.

You have fifteen boats to choose from rather than forty-six, and all fifteen have a page on this site. If the one you want is full on your dates, the substitute may not be similar.

The bay is quieter because less is there. No Sung Sot, no Titop staircase, no floating village of the size Ha Long offers. Travellers who came to Vietnam to see the photograph they have already seen will not find it here, and some of them write that afterwards.

Common questions

Is Bai Tu Long cheaper? Marginally. The median Bai Tu Long boat starts from $144 per person, two sharing, against $155 on Lan Ha and $158 on Ha Long, on rate sheets read between 6 August and 14 October 2026. Its twelve priced boats start anywhere from $105 to $250 per person, so the individual boat decides far more than the bay does.

Is it really less crowded? Fewer boats sail it, which is a fact rather than an impression. Whether your anchorage is quiet depends on the day. In May 2026 the province announced what it called the first designated anchorage for overnight boats in Bai Tu Long: Hang Nha Tro, by Nha Tro cave off Ban Sen island, sized for about ten boats and up to 150 guests (Lao Dong, 10 May 2026). If a quiet mooring matters to you, ask the operator which anchorage it uses for the night and get the answer in writing.

Can I combine it with Ha Long? Some three-day itineraries cross between the two. Ask for the stop list in writing, because the crossing is what makes the difference and it is not always there.

Which pier will I leave from? The Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay for twelve of the fifteen boats, Tuan Chau for two and Hon Gai Pier for one. Check the pier on your voucher.
