Lan Ha Bay cruises: the biggest fleet, and why

Thirty-six of the seventy boats we track sail Lan Ha. Twenty-three sail Ha Long and eleven sail Bai Tu Long. The bay that used to be described as the quiet alternative now carries more of the overnight fleet than the famous one and the remote one put together.

Prices did not follow. The median rate here is $145 against $148 in Ha Long, close enough that choosing Lan Ha is not a way of saving money.

Lan Ha is the steel bay: thirty-three of thirty-six hulls, against six wooden boats in Ha Long and four in Bai Tu Long. It is also where most of the new capacity has gone, and the practical consequence is choice. Twenty-eight of these thirty-six boats have a page on this site, more than the other two bays combined.

The rate range stops short of the other bays at the top end. The most expensive boats in our whole set, at $615 and $510, sail Ha Long and Bai Tu Long. If you want the very top of the market you are looking outside Lan Ha.

Read that list against the Ha Long one and the difference is plain. Ha Long boats cluster around Sung Sot cave, Luon cave and the Titop staircase. Lan Ha boats cluster around a village, a beach, a national park and a cave you paddle through rather than walk into.

None of these is a monument. They are places to swim, kayak, cycle or walk, which is why this bay suits people who want a day rather than a photograph.

Viet Hai village, at eighteen boats, is the most-listed stop in the bay and the one guests split on hardest. It sits inside the national park, reached through a gap in the hills, usually by bicycle or buggy. People who expected an untouched fishing hamlet write that it has been tidied for visitors. People who expected nothing write that the ride in was the best hour of the trip.

What the reviews show

Lan Ha gives us our largest sample: 4,902 classified reviews across twenty-nine boats.

Kayaking or swimming comes up in 12.7% of them, against 5.9% in Ha Long. That is more than double, and it is the clearest confirmation we have that the stop lists translate into what people actually do.

The rate of one and two star reviews is 5.0%, the lowest of the three bays, against 5.9% in Ha Long and 5.8% in Bai Tu Long. We would not build a decision on a gap that size, but it does not contradict anything else here.

One number runs the wrong way. The road transfer is mentioned in 6.2% of Lan Ha reviews against 4.0% in Ha Long, the highest of the three bays, which brings us to the thing nobody mentions in the brochures.

Every Lan Ha boat we confirmed leaves from Tuan Chau

Lan Ha sits off Cat Ba island, nearer Hai Phong than Ha Long City. It is reasonable to assume the drive from Hanoi changes.

In our data it does not. Of the twenty-three Lan Ha boats where we could establish a departure point, every one leaves from Tuan Chau Marina, on the Ha Long side. Thirteen more do not say. Choosing the southern bay moves where your boat sails, not where your bus goes, and the extra water between the marina and the Lan Ha anchorages is time your boat spends sailing rather than time you spend somewhere.

That may be part of why transfer complaints run highest here. We cannot prove the link and we are not going to pretend otherwise, but the two facts sit next to each other.

The catch

The bay is no longer quiet, and pages written five years ago that call it undiscovered are describing a different place. Thirty-six overnight boats work this water and they share a small number of anchorages. Guests mention how many other boats or people were around them in 6.6% of reviews across our whole set, and Lan Ha is not an exception to that.

The limitation you should weigh is that Lan Ha has no headline sight. If somebody in your party has come to Vietnam for the cave they have seen in photographs, this is the wrong bay and they will say so. Sung Sot is in Ha Long, on thirteen of that bay’s twenty-three boats, and no Lan Ha boat in our set lists it.

There is also less at the top of the market here, so if you are spending above $300 a night the choice narrows quickly.

Common questions

Is Lan Ha better than Ha Long? For water, yes on the evidence. For caves, no. Our bay comparison sets the three side by side.

Is it less crowded? Less than Ha Long at the famous stops, but it carries the largest fleet of the three bays, so it is not empty. Bai Tu Long has fewer boats on the water than either.

Will I still see Ha Long Bay? Twelve of the thirty-six Lan Ha boats list a Ha Long stop as well. If seeing both matters, ask for the stop list in writing rather than relying on the bay name.

Do I have to go through Cat Ba town? Not usually. Most itineraries here work the water around the island rather than the town, and the pier at the Hanoi end is Tuan Chau in every case we could confirm.
