Things to do in Ha Long Bay, counted boat by boat

We read the day-by-day itinerary of 57 boats and marked every activity on it. Two things are on all of them. Most of the rest depends on the bay you sail and whether you stay a second night.

All 57 overnight boats whose itineraries we could read put you in a kayak and take you inside a cave. Squid fishing, a sunset happy hour, swimming and early morning tai chi are on 49 to 51 of them. Beyond that core, what you do depends on the bay and on whether you stay one night or two, since cycling and beaches mostly sit on the second day.

What is there to do on a Ha Long Bay cruise?

Seven activities are on at least 48 of the 57 boats, five are on between 18 and 46, and five are on 17 or fewer. The table counts 17 activities on the itineraries halongbaytours.com publishes, read from our copies saved on 6 August 2026. We held such a page for 57 of the 59 boats we listed on 30 September 2026; our copy of that site has no page for Ambassador or Orchid Trendy. Boats we have published since then are not in these counts.

Activity Boats (of 57) Ha Long Bay (13) Lan Ha Bay (31) Bai Tu Long (13) Two-night trip only (of 52)
Cave visit 57 13 31 13 1
Kayaking 57 13 31 13 2
Squid fishing 51 12 28 11 2
Sunset party or happy hour 49 10 29 10 5
Swimming 49 11 28 10 15
Tai chi 49 11 27 11 1
Bamboo or rowing boat 48 12 26 10 6
Cooking class or spring roll making 46 9 27 10 1
Spa or massage 38 10 22 6 5
Beach 36 10 18 8 27
Cycling 23 2 21 0 21
Floating or fishing village 19 4 3 12 7
Cinema or movie night 17 1 14 2 0
Pearl farm 11 6 1 4 6
Titop or another viewpoint climb 8 7 0 1 0
Hiking 7 6 0 1 1
Yoga 1 1 0 0 0

The last column covers the 52 boats that publish both a one-night and a two-night itinerary. It counts the boats where an activity is on the longer trip and missing from the shorter one.

The limitation is what a count of words can see. An itinerary is a plan, and weather, tides and the cruise manager can drop an activity on the day. The count cannot tell you how long an activity lasts, how well it is run, or whether it is in your fare, and a broad word such as “massage” or “climb” can catch a line about something else. We tried the operators’ own websites as a cross-check and could match a page to only 6 of those 59 boats. We have not found anyone who publishes an activity list for the whole fleet.

On our count the widest spread belongs to Paradise Legacy and Heritage Line Violet, with 13 of the 17 activities each, against 10 for the middle boat.

Boat Bay Activities (of 17) One night / two nights
Paradise Legacy Ha Long Bay 13 10 / 13
Heritage Line Violet Bai Tu Long 13 not split on the page
Sena Lan Ha Bay 12 9 / 11
Orchid Luxury Lan Ha Bay 12 10 / 12

The total also counts activities an itinerary names outside its day-by-day blocks, which is how Sena reaches 12 when neither of its trips lists more than 11.

Paradise Legacy reaches 13 on its three-day trip and 10 on one night. On Lan Ha the top figure is 12, shared by Sena, Orchid Luxury and Elite of the Seas.

What will you do on almost any boat?

A cave and a kayak on every boat we read, and on 48 of them a ride in a bamboo boat. Squid fishing, happy hour and tai chi fill the evening and the early morning.

Caves

All 57 itineraries include one, and 407 reviews in our log mention a cave. Which cave depends on the bay. Sung Sot is a Ha Long Bay stop, while the Dark and Bright Cave, listed mostly by Lan Ha boats, is a passage that boats take guests through on the water, by kayak or on a bamboo boat. The caves and islands you will actually stop at sorts them by boat, and there is a separate page on Sung Sot.

Kayaking

All 57 again. It is also the activity guests write about most: 706 of the 7,471 reviews with written text mention it, and 573 of those read as positive. On Halora Nova in August 2026 there were not enough kayaks for the group, one guest wrote, so the paddle felt rushed and people swam while they waited their turn. Our kayaking guide covers where you paddle.

Bamboo boats

Forty-eight boats schedule one. From the canoe and bamboo boat trip on Aspira in July 2026, one guest saw langurs in the distance. Another, in February, found the bamboo boat cave tour over in about 30 minutes with nothing explained, more a photo stop than a tour.

Squid fishing

It is on 51 itineraries and takes place in the evening. Nobody caught anything on one Halora Nova evening in August 2026, and the guest still found it interesting, if a little crowded.

Happy hour and tai chi

Each is on 49 itineraries, and they bracket the evening and the next morning, which what to expect on board walks through hour by hour. Tai chi is the early one. At 5:58 am on a Mon Cheri morning in July 2026 the sun deck was empty; the instructor turned up at 6:10 and, the guest wrote, called the class off because it was spitting with rain. On Doria in May 2026, beer ran two to three times the mainland price by one guest’s account, so ask for the drinks list first.

Can you swim in Ha Long Bay?

Yes, and 49 of the 57 boats schedule a swim stop. The sea at our open-water point averages 28.3 to 31.8°C from May to October on three years of model data, and the weather guide has each month and the source.

Eight reviews in our log describe jellyfish in the water, five of them from June to August 2026. A Rosy guest in July 2026 said nobody had warned them before the swim. An Aspira guest the same month saw a few and nobody was stung. We cannot tell you how common jellyfish are, and nobody publishes a count.

What depends on the boat you choose?

The cooking class, the spa and the cinema. Each is on some boats and missing from others in every bay.

Cooking class

Forty-six boats list a cooking class or spring roll making. Of the 184 reviews that mention it, 21 are mixed or negative, level with our log as a whole. The catch is the word “class”. Guests on Halora Nova in August 2026 and Orchid Classic in June 2026 both booked what was described as a cooking class and watched the chef do the cooking, though a Halora Nova guest in April rolled their own. If making them yourself matters, ask before you book, and see food on board.

Spa

It is on 38 itineraries, and on only 6 of the 13 Bai Tu Long boats in that set. Assume you pay for it. Only 2 of the 38 itinerary pages mark it as extra, but the inclusion lists are plainer: 111 of the 139 listings we read in August 2026 name spa and massage among the exclusions, and none names it as included. Of the 125 that mention the spa, 99 read as positive and 15 are negative outright, twice the rate for our whole log. One Doria guest in May found a room with two tables and prices they thought inflated; an Aspira guest in July thought it very good for a boat. Ask for the price list before you book a treatment.

Cinema

Seventeen boats list a film night, 14 of them on Lan Ha.

Which activities belong to one bay?

Cycling is a Lan Ha activity, floating villages belong to Bai Tu Long, and the viewpoint climbs are in Ha Long Bay. Our bay comparison covers the rest.

Cycling

Twenty-one of the 31 Lan Ha boats list a ride, against 2 of 13 in Ha Long Bay and none in Bai Tu Long. Viet Hai village on Cat Ba is the stop named by more boats than any other, 32 of the 67 boats whose stop lists we hold. Viet Hai was the highlight of day two for a Doria guest in May 2026, who took the bike and found the ride scenic. The Lan Ha Bay cruises page lists the boats.

Floating villages

Twelve of the 13 Bai Tu Long boats in that set visit one, and only 3 of 31 Lan Ha boats do. If the villages are why you are coming, start with Bai Tu Long cruises.

Titop and hiking

Seven of the 13 Ha Long Bay boats in that set list Titop or a similar climb, and six list a hike. No Lan Ha boat lists either.

Pearl farms

Eleven boats stop at one: 6 in Ha Long Bay, 4 in Bai Tu Long and 1 on Lan Ha.

What does a second night add?

Land and beaches. On the 52 boats that publish both itineraries, the core barely changes with trip length: caves are on both versions for 51 of them, kayaking for 50, tai chi for 45 and squid fishing for 44. The second day is where the shore activities live.

On a one-night trip you miss cycling on 21 of the 22 boats among those 52 that offer it. The beach is two-night only on 27 of the 34 boats that list one, the pearl farm on 6 of 10 and the floating village on 7 of 15. If a bike ride through Viet Hai or an afternoon on a beach is the reason you are going, book the 3 days 2 nights itinerary. If you mainly want the water, the 2 days 1 night itinerary covers the core. Our guide to two days or three weighs up what the extra night costs.

What costs extra on board?

The road transfer from Hanoi, drinks and the spa. Of the 139 listings we read in August 2026, 114 put the Hanoi transfer among the exclusions, 111 the spa and 98 drinks, and only 3 include the transfer. The itineraries themselves rarely mention price: “optional” or “extra charge” sits beside an activity on two pages for the spa, two for a cave, and one each for squid fishing, tai chi and Titop.

For the activities, the same listings split. Kayaking is named in the fare on 116 of the 139, and squid fishing on only 32, although it appears on 51 of the 57 itineraries. What is not included goes through the rest line by line. Get anything you care about confirmed in writing.

Which activities do guests complain about?

Titop, by a clear margin: 13 of the 34 reviews that mention it are mixed or negative, against 11% across the 7,094 reviews in our log that carry a tone. Happy hour, pearl farms, the cinema and the bamboo boat come next, between 27% and 30%, on small samples.

Activity Reviews that mention it Mixed or negative Share
Titop or viewpoint climb 34 13 38%
Pearl farm 23 7 30%
Happy hour 89 27 30%
Cinema or movie night 17 5 29%
Bamboo or rowing boat 59 16 27%
Spa or massage 125 26 21%
Cave visit 407 84 21%
Kayaking 706 133 19%
Swimming 250 47 19%
Squid fishing 126 21 17%
Tai chi 139 18 13%
Cooking class 184 21 11%

Tone is our reading of each whole review as positive, mixed or negative. A mixed review that names Titop may be unhappy about something else on the trip. The counts match English words only, so reviews in other languages are missing from this table.

Common questions

Is swimming on a one-night cruise? Usually, but check the itinerary. Of the 52 boats that publish both a one-night and a two-night itinerary, 31 list a swim on both, 15 only on the two-night trip and 1 only on the one-night trip. The other 5 do not list a swim at all. In winter it may not matter much: the sea at our open-water point averages 18.6°C in January and February, on three years of model data.

Is kayaking included on a Ha Long Bay cruise? It is on the itinerary of all 57 boats we read, and 116 of 139 listings we checked in August 2026 state in writing that it is in the fare. If your listing does not name it, ask the seller to confirm it in writing. Ask too whether there are enough kayaks for everyone, since one Halora Nova guest in August 2026 found there were not.

What is squid fishing on a Ha Long cruise? It is an evening session of night fishing from the boat, on 51 of the 57 itineraries we read. A Halora Nova guest in August 2026 caught nothing and still found it interesting. Only 32 of 139 listings name it in their inclusions, so ask whether it is part of your fare. Ask what time it starts, too: an Aspira guest in February 2026 found it was not announced over the tannoy and missed it.

Can you do everything on a one-night cruise? You get the core on a one-night cruise. Of the 52 boats that publish both itineraries, caves are on both versions for 51, kayaking for 50, tai chi for 45 and squid fishing for 44. The shore activities mostly need the second day. Cycling is two-night only on 21 of 22 boats that offer it, and the beach on 27 of 34. If those matter to you, book three days.
