Ti Top Island: which boats stop, and when to go

Twenty-nine of the 31 Ha Long boats we publish stop at Ti Top, so you will almost certainly climb its steps or swim off its beach. The choice that changes the visit is the hour, and only seven boats go in the morning.

If you book a Ha Long cruise, Ti Top is almost certainly on it. Twenty-nine of the 31 Ha Long boats we publish stop at the island, counted on 16 October 2026, and twenty-seven of those also take you to Sung Sot Cave on the same trip. What you get is a small crescent of sand at the bottom and a long staircase to a lookout at the top. What differs between boats is the hour you land. Twenty-two go in on the first afternoon. Seven go the next morning.

Why is it called Ti Top?

It carries the name of a cosmonaut. Ha Long Bay’s management board says President Ho Chi Minh named the island to mark the visit he made there in 1962 with Gherman Titov, the Soviet cosmonaut, and that it is the only island in the bay he named. Operators spell it Titop, Titov or Ti Top; all three are the same island, on the management board’s Itinerary 2 route with Sung Sot and Luon Cave.

The board describes a crescent of golden sand at the foot of the island, the climb to the summit for the view, and games on the beach. Vietnamese travel guides put the staircase at around 400 steps.

Which boats stop at Ti Top, and at what time?

Twenty-nine boats stop at Ti Top, all of them on Ha Long Bay: seven land on the morning of day two and 22 on the first afternoon. No boat we publish on Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long goes there. The times are each operator’s own, from the timetable on the boat’s page with us, except Catherine’s, which comes from a booking site, and the table puts the morning boats first.

The island opens at 07:30 all year and closes at 17:30 from 16 April to 31 October, or 17:00 from 1 November to 15 April, on the management board’s published hours. Calista’s 07:20 slot is ten minutes before that opening.

Is it better to go in the morning or the afternoon?

The morning, in our view, if the boat you like offers it. In June 2025 the newspaper Lao Dong reported that Ti Top’s was then the only beach on Ha Long Bay open to visitors, that it was always overloaded, and that day boats were knocking into each other to reach the landing. Of the 45 guest reviews we hold that name the island, six describe it as packed or queued, one of them counting what felt like a thousand people on a small beach in July 2026. An Indonesian guest who landed early in June 2026 found no crowd at all.

The catch is that the morning slot is scarce and shared. Seven boats out of 29 offer it, and the day trips use the island too: nine of the ten Ha Long day trips we read between August and October 2026 include Ti Top, and one of them, Lavoya Boutique’s sunrise trip, checks guests in at 07:00 and sails at 08:00.

Three of the seven morning boats have at least 100 guest reviews collected over more than a year, all with more than four in five at five stars, counted on 16 October 2026. Alisa Premier has 393 reviews collected, 92% five-star, and lands at 07:30. Sea Stars has 181 at 87%, and Calista 203 at 84%. Alisa Premier and Calista both go into Luon Cave on the first afternoon.

How hard is the climb to the top?

It is a real climb. One guest in March 2023 put it at half an hour on foot to the top, tiring and worth it for the view. A guest in October 2026 wrote that the stairs ruled the climb out for most of their group. On 12 October 2026, at two in the afternoon, a Japanese visitor fainted partway up; the management board’s staff and the 115 medical team stationed on the island gave first aid and took her ashore to hospital. Take water. Wear shoes that grip, and in summer go up early or not at all if heat troubles you.

Swim or climb, and what to bring?

Choose one before you land: the climb needs water and shoes that grip, the beach needs swimwear under your clothes. The beach draws its share of the crowding complaints: a June 2023 guest found the roped-off swimming area too small for the crowd in it. One guest in April 2026 was given ten minutes between the cave visit and the boat to Ti Top to change into swimwear, so on an afternoon that pairs it with Sung Sot, wear your swimming things under your clothes. Rain changes the visit too: a guest in March 2025 found that rain limited it.

Entrance is normally in the fare. Twenty-three of the 26 Ti Top boats whose terms we hold list entrance or sightseeing fees as included; ask the other three in writing.

Common questions

Can I skip the climb and stay on the beach? Yes. Twenty-three of the 29 boats list both the beach and the climb at this stop, and you pick one. If you want neither, ask to stay aboard; one guest in October 2026 skipped the island because of two toddlers in the group.

Is Ti Top on Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long cruises? No. All 29 boats that stop there sail Ha Long Bay, and none of the Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long boats we publish lists it. If Ti Top matters to you, that settles the choice of bay. The caves and islands guide shows which stops the other two bays use instead.

Can I see Ti Top on a day trip? Yes. Nine of the ten Ha Long day trips we read between August and October 2026 include it, among them a sunrise trip that sails at 08:00. All nine also visit Sung Sot, so a day trip gives you both without a night aboard, though you share the island at the same hours as everyone else. Our day trip page compares a day on the water with a night aboard, and the two-day, one-night page sets out the usual overnight timetable around the island.

Why do some boats spell it Titov? Because the island is named after Gherman Titov, the Soviet cosmonaut who visited in 1962 with Ho Chi Minh. Ti Top and Titop follow the Vietnamese name, Ti Tốp, and the management board’s own pages use both of those. All three spellings on a timetable mean the same island, so you do not need to ask which one your boat means.
