Luon Cave: which boats go in, and how

Luon is a low tunnel through the foot of an island into a lake walled by cliffs, and you go through it by kayak or in a rowed bamboo boat. We list every boat that goes in, the hour it does, and which of the two boats costs extra.

Luon Cave is a passage, and the way through is by water. You slide under a low arch at the foot of a limestone island, by kayak or sitting in a bamboo boat that a local boatman rows, and come out on a still lake with cliffs on every side. Nineteen of the 31 Ha Long boats we publish take you there on their two-day trip, counted on 16 October 2026, and all nineteen call at Sung Sot and Ti Top during the same trip.

So choosing Luon means choosing the classic Ha Long Bay circuit. What changes from boat to boat is the hour you go in, which of the two boats you get, and whether one of them costs extra.

What is Luon Cave?

It is a sea-level tunnel worn through the rock. The Ha Long Bay Management Board describes it as a notch cave: seawater dissolved the base of the limestone and slabs of ceiling fell away along the layers, leaving a tunnel under the island with stalactites hanging from its roof. It sits in the Bo Hon group of islands, the same cluster as Sung Sot Cave.

Inside, the board’s own page lists kayaks and rowing boats as the ways to get about the lake, rhesus macaques that interact with visitors, and plants found only in this bay, among them the Ha Long cycad and the Ha Long palm. Look at the lake-side walls. Three to four metres above the waterline there are bands of mountain-snail and freshwater mollusc shells, and the board counts Luon among the cave sites of the Soi Nhu culture, 18,000 to 7,000 years ago.

The cave is open 07:30 to 17:30 from 16 April to 31 October, and 07:30 to 17:00 from 1 November to 15 April, on the board’s published hours.

Which boats go into Luon Cave, and when?

Of the 19 Ha Long boats that stop at Luon, thirteen go in on the first afternoon, the eleven with clock times between 14:00 and 16:00, and six the next morning, setting off between 07:15 and 08:00. The times below are the operators’ own, from the timetable on each boat’s page with us, except Catherine’s, which comes from a booking site; the last column is what the operator’s terms say about paying at the cave. The table runs in the order of the visit.

On the timetables that print the next stop, Luon takes about an hour from tender to tender. Syrena goes in at 14:15 and is at Ti Top at 15:15; Aime’e and Victory move on at 16:00 after a 14:45 start.

Kayak or bamboo boat: which should you take?

Take the kayak if you want to paddle yourself and do not mind a low roof overhead. Take the bamboo boat if you are with small children, carrying a camera you want dry, or simply want to sit. Eighteen of the nineteen boats offer both. A guest reviewing in December 2023 called Luon the favourite stop of the trip and told readers to choose the kayak over the rowing boat, while a group on Aime’e in October 2026 that included two toddlers went in on the rowed bamboo boat.

Who pays for what is less tidy, and it differs from one boat to the next. On five of the nineteen, the operator’s terms put one of the two boats at extra cost. Ambassador and Paradise Elegance include the bamboo boat and charge for the kayak; a guest on Paradise Elegance, writing in Vietnamese in June 2025, reported a 300,000 VND charge for the kayak. Athena Luxury and Athena Premium do the opposite, with free kayaks and a 50,000 VND public ticket for the rowed boat. Cozy Bay Grand includes the kayak and puts the bamboo boat at $5 to $8 a person. Those are the operators’ terms as we read them between August and October 2026. Fourteen of the seventeen Luon boats whose terms we hold list entrance or sightseeing fees as included. One guest in August 2026 advised bringing cash to Luon for a drink. Our kayaking in Ha Long guide covers paddling elsewhere in the bay.

Is Luon Cave crowded?

Sometimes. Every boat in the table runs the same Ha Long circuit, and the day boats come too: six of the ten Ha Long day trips we read between August and October 2026 go in, boarding between 08:00 and 12:00 depending on the boat. Of the 24 guest reviews we hold that name Luon, three describe crowding. One guest in March 2025 found it beautiful but overcrowded, another wrote of queues of more than twenty minutes in the heat across the day’s stops, and a German guest in January 2026 complained of too many boats and of monkeys being fed to put on a show. A Taiwanese guest that same month saw other companies’ boats feeding the monkeys and thanked their own crew for not doing it.

The limitation is the afternoon slot. Thirteen of the nineteen boats go in on the first afternoon, which, on our reading of the day-trip timetables, is when the day boats are also out on the water. The six morning boats set off between 07:15 and 08:00, around the 07:30 opening and before most of the day trips we checked have left port. None of this guarantees an empty lake on a given date.

How do I make sure my boat goes into Luon?

Look for Luon by name on the operator’s own two-day timetable, then confirm it in writing before you pay. Programmes change. Indochine Premium says it dropped Luon from its Ha Long route on 1 June 2026 because of crowding, Amanda’s current two-day programme swaps it for a pearl farm, and Emeraude Classic keeps it for three-day guests only. One guest who sailed in December 2025 had both Ti Top and Luon replaced on the day, with crowding and weather given as the reasons, so ask what the crew does when the cave is closed or full.

For a first-afternoon Luon with a strong guest record, Alisa Premier (15:30; 393 reviews collected, 92% five-star by 16 October 2026) and Calista (14:15; 203 reviews, 84%) are the two to look at, and both also fit Sung Sot into the same afternoon. Catherine (496 reviews, 85%) goes in the next morning. Those are the only Luon boats with at least 100 reviews collected over more than a year and over four in five at five stars. Our two-day, one-night itinerary page sets out what the rest of a typical trip looks like, and the caves and islands guide shows how Luon compares with the other stops.

Common questions

Is Luon Cave on the Lan Ha side? No. It sits in the Bo Hon island group of Ha Long Bay, close to Sung Sot Cave, on the management board’s Itinerary 2 route, and every boat in our Luon table sails the Ha Long side. If you have booked a Lan Ha cruise, Luon will not be on your trip; the caves and islands guide lists what the southern bays visit instead.

Can I go in without paddling? Yes. All nineteen boats offer a rowed boat, usually bamboo and worked by a local boatman, and eighteen of them also let you take a kayak instead; on Syrena’s two-day trip the rowed boat is the only way in. Check whether your boat charges for it: on Athena Luxury and Athena Premium it is a 50,000 VND ticket, and on Cozy Bay Grand $5 to $8 a person.

Will I see monkeys? Possibly. The management board lists rhesus macaques at Luon and says they interact with visitors, and two guests reviewing in January 2026 saw them. Both described monkeys being fed from boats, one calling it a show put on for tourists, and both disapproved. Watch from your boat, keep food in a bag and out of sight, and do not hold anything out to them.
