From Tam Coc or Trang An to the Ha Long cruise piers is about 170 to 220 km, depending on the hotel and the pier, and around three and a half hours in a shared van. You can go straight there without passing back through Hanoi. Twelve of the 92 boats we publish, from eight operators, offer a pick-up in Ninh Binh on their own websites, and on the five operators that print a seat fare, read between August and October 2026, a shared seat costs about US$19 to US$25 each way.
Three and a half hours is the figure operators give most often, and the distances they quote run from 170 to 220 km. Our own routing over OpenStreetMap, run on 22 October 2026, puts Tam Coc 172 km from Tuan Chau Marina and Trang An 171 km. That route skirts Hanoi entirely. It runs east across the Red River delta on National Highway 10 and picks up the expressways near Hai Phong for the last stretch to Ha Long.
Going through the capital is the long way round. Trang An is 94 km from the Old Quarter and the Old Quarter 148 km from Tuan Chau on the same routing, so the detour adds roughly 70 km, and for most people a night in a Hanoi hotel.
The van takes longer than the drive. Unicharm’s three-day package runs the trip in reverse: guests leave the boat at 12:10 and reach Tam Coc between 15:30 and 16:00. Aime’e puts a shared shuttle at three and a half to four and a half hours, and Mon Cheri’s Ninh Binh van timetable allows four and a half. Our reading is that hotel rounds at both ends account for most of that spread.
Twelve of the 92, on terms printed by the operators themselves, read between August and October 2026. All but Venezia board on the Ha Long side.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Pandora | La Pandora | Tuan Chau | Shared van US$20 a person each way; pick-ups from 07:00, return van from 12:00 | Aug and Oct 2026 |

| Orient Legacy | Orient Legacy | Tuan Chau | Shared limousine US$20 a person each way from Ninh Binh, Hoa Lu or Tam Coc; private four-seat car US$120 each way | Sep 2026 |
| Mon Cheri | Mon Cheri | Tuan Chau | Shared limousine US$25 a person, leaving Ninh Binh 07:00 to 07:30, about four and a half hours; back from Ha Long at 12:00 | Aug 2026 |
| Cycad | Cycad | International port | Shared seat 500,000 VND a person each way, about US$19 | Oct 2026 |
| Hermes | Hermes | Tuan Chau | Shared van to Ninh Binh after the cruise, collecting 11:30 to 11:45; private car US$130 with seven seats, US$150 with nine or sixteen | Aug 2026 |
| Verdure Lotus | Classic, Grandeur | Tuan Chau | Hotel pick-up in Tam Coc and Hoa Lu, 07:30 to 08:10, on packages that include the transfer | Oct 2026 |
| Venezia | Venezia | Beo Harbour, Cat Ba | Arranged on request | Oct 2026 |
For two people, two shared seats come to about US$40 one way. Four people splitting La Regina’s private car pay US$30 each.
For the Ninh Binh leg, start with La Pandora. Two of the twelve sit on our guest-score ranking of boats with at least 100 reviews spread over a year, and La Pandora is the one above that ranking’s median of 84.35%, at 95.4% five-star across 395 collected reviews (32 boats, run 22 October 2026). Its Tuan Chau lounge checks guests in at 12:00, half an hour after La Regina, Orient Legacy, Mon Cheri, Verdure Lotus and Venezia (11:30) and forty minutes after Hermes (11:20).
Yes, if the van leaves Ninh Binh by about 07:30. The most common lounge time is 11:30, given by 36 of the 72 boats that print one, and 78 of the 86 that print a boarding time board between 11:45 and 12:30 (operator timetables, counted 22 October 2026). Work back three and a half hours plus a hotel round and you arrive at the times the operators already use. La Pandora starts collecting at 07:00, and Verdure Lotus collects in Tam Coc between 07:30 and 08:10 for an 11:30 arrival at its Tuan Chau lounge. Our guide to what time Ha Long cruises board has the timetables boat by boat.
The return is gentler on the clock. A two-day cruise puts guests ashore at around 11:00, the middle of 72 boats’ times; Hermes’s Ninh Binh van then collects at 11:30 to 11:45, and La Pandora’s leaves from noon. Unicharm, whose guests leave the boat at 12:10, quotes Tam Coc at 15:30 to 16:00.
Most likely Tuan Chau Marina, where 68 of the 92 boats board. Twenty-three use the Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay, five kilometres further on from Tam Coc by our routing, and two boats in the table are among them, Cycad and La Regina Classic. Venezia is the exception: its guests board at Beo Harbour in Cat Ba town, 175 km from Tam Coc on the same routing, including the ferry across to Cat Ba. Give your driver the lounge name or lot number from your confirmation: at Tuan Chau, La Regina Grand, Legend and Royal use Lot 24 and La Pandora uses Kiosk 26. Which harbour you leave from covers each pier.
Cruise first is the easier order, in our view, though operators sell both. Indochina Junk’s Bai Tu Long and Ninh Binh tour spends day one in Ninh Binh out of Hanoi and drives to the coast the next morning. Bhaya’s three-day package and Unicharm’s put the cruise first and finish in Ninh Binh.
Cruise first means leaving the boat late morning and reaching Tam Coc by mid-afternoon with no early alarm. Ninh Binh first means a van at 07:00 or 07:30 and a morning on the road before lunch on board. It suits a trip that ends in Hanoi: 31 boats print a time for their shuttle’s return to the city. If you are flying home from Noi Bai, ending in Ninh Binh barely helps: Trang An is 122 km from the airport on our routing, against 169 km from Tuan Chau. Our guide to getting from Hanoi to Ha Long covers the Hanoi shuttles, and which airport to fly into covers Noi Bai and the two closer airports.
The catch is that the Ninh Binh van is a thinner service than the Hanoi one. Twelve boats offer it, where 52 print a Hanoi pick-up time, and two operators in the table, Venezia and Verdure Lotus, describe the transfer without a fare. Hermes sells the shared van and still suggests a private car in its own FAQ.
The Ninh Binh fares on this page, about US$19 to US$25 a seat on La Pandora, La Regina, Orient Legacy, Cycad and Mon Cheri and US$120 to US$150 for a private car on La Regina, Orient Legacy and Hermes, are what each operator printed when we read its site between August and October 2026. Confirm the price, whether it is per seat or per car, and the exact pick-up point in writing before you pay.
How long is the drive from Ninh Binh to Ha Long Bay? About three and a half hours in a shared van, the figure operators give most often. Operators quote 170 to 220 km depending on the hotel and the pier; our routing from Tam Coc to Tuan Chau Marina measured 172 km on 22 October 2026. The road crosses the delta on National Highway 10 and joins the expressway near Hai Phong, so it never enters Hanoi.
Can a Ha Long cruise pick me up in Ninh Binh? On twelve of the 92 boats we publish, yes, according to their operators’ websites. Shared seats cost US$20 each way on La Pandora, La Regina’s four boats and Orient Legacy, US$25 on Mon Cheri and 500,000 VND on Cycad. Hermes, La Regina and Orient Legacy also price private cars, US$120 to US$150 a car each way. Venezia arranges it on request.
What time should I leave Ninh Binh? By about 07:30 for a boat that checks in at 11:30, which is the most common lounge time. La Pandora starts its Ninh Binh pick-ups at 07:00 and Verdure Lotus at 07:30. Going the other way, vans leave the pier between 11:30 and noon and reach Tam Coc in the middle of the afternoon.
Should I go back through Hanoi instead? Only if you want a night in Hanoi anyway. The detour adds roughly 70 km on our routing, and the commonest Hanoi pick-up time is 08:00, given by 26 of the 52 boats that print one, so catching that van from Ninh Binh, 94 km away, means a very early start.

Details →About 160 km of expressway and two and a half hours by road. Twelve of the 92 boats we publish include the ride from Hanoi on their own terms, and 21 others publish a shared-shuttle price, mostly US$20 to US$45 a person return. The commonest pick-up time in the Old Quarter is 08:00. The seaplane stopped flying in April 2026, and the rail line was suspended in 2020.
Getting thereMost Ha Long boats want you at their lounge by 11:30 and put you back on the quay at about 11:00 the next morning. Here is the clock for a one-night trip, from the timetables operators publish for 89 of the 92 boats we list.
Choosing a boatTwo harbours serve all but one of the 92 boats we publish. The one you sail from sets your meeting point and, on our records, it largely decides your bay. Tuan Chau is the Lan Ha and Ha Long hub; the international port at Bai Chay serves most of Bai Tu Long. One boat starts on Cat Ba and none from the Hai Phong mainland.
Getting thereBy road, Cat Bi at Hai Phong is the closest airport to every harbour our 92 boats leave from, 42 km from Tuan Chau and 47 km from the Bai Chay port. Noi Bai in Hanoi has the long-haul flights and 169 km of road. Van Don's board, read on 22 October 2026, showed one route.
